i am a little fuzzy about softmodding, my head could use a defragmentation. Okay one thing is you boot up your xbox and switch the ide cable wiht ur comp to access the hard drive, okay this part makes sense :). Next what do you do i know there is something where you need to flash which is loading a new dasahobard, am i right? Next i want to FTP and put movies and music on my xbox. So how can ihave the evox dashboard and xbox media centre at the same time, i am gonna put a 200 gb hdd on my box and would like to put on some avi's, mpeg's, mp3's some programs. And can you run linux on your box, with linux, evox, and xbox media centre. Finally what is flashing, is it just loading a switching your dashboard.

First thing, I'm still a bit of a newbie myself so I don't know the "best" way to go about softmodding, but after reading this post, I can see why you may be confused. You confused me lol.

I can't answer all your questions because, as I said, I'm still a newbie myself. I will tell you what I would do.

The first thing I would do is softmod your xbox using this method. http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/114/62/
There are many ways to sofmod an xbox these days, but this is how I did it and I have never had any problems. I used the Action Replay/Splinter Cell method.

After your xbox is softmodded and you're ready to install your new HDD:

This method worked like a charm for me.

Now as for evox and XBMC. I use evox as my dash and have XBMC installed as an app. All I have to do is go into load applications and start XBMC. Easy enough.

I only tried this once, it didnt work. I ended up swapping with a flashed xbox, loaded evox on a cd and ftp'd the info I needed to the hd, I have perfected my own way of getting a box modded ( I flash most of the time ) so I never needed to even try it again.
