i have cable(virgin media) and my modem only has 1 ethernet port at the back. the modem connects directly to my pc with a ethernet cable. is it possible to connect my xbox 360 to my modem and connect to the internet at the same time? my modem has a usb port. Can someone tell me what i need to buy and do?

best solution would be to get a router. Then you will have open ports. I bought a wireless router and wireless gaming adapter from Linksys so i connect wirelessly from another room. If you are in the same room and can reach the TV with a Cat5 crossover cable (50 feet cord is about $13 at CompUSA) then you may just save money and get the non-wireless set up.

wireless adapters are not a rip off, they are for people who have a system in a different room from their PC, like me. I can stream media and play games from the internet from any room in my house.

Most people will tell you that you will need what is called a patch cable (strait through cable) which is like the one you probably have going from your modem to the PC now.

I have always used a Cat5 crossover cable for mine, both before and after i bought a router. With a router you always use the Cat5 cable, but going strait to your PC i am not 100% sure a Cat5 will work for everyone's set up. Just do a little research.

(yes, i know you have a 360 but setting up the network will be the same for both)
