Are you trying to just plug the two computers up directly or are you going through a hub/router/switch?

You can't do that. You need a special crossover cable in order to connect computers directly... without a hub/router/switch.

And then you'll need to change the Network addressing from DHCP (probably what you're using) to static IP addressing, making sure that both addresses are in the same subnet.

Get your crossover cable (or hub) first. Without that nothing else matters.

is this crossover cable a RJ45 cable? because its the same one i use for my 360.. i was told that i couldnt use one to connect my xbox 360 up to xbox live.. but strangely enough it works. admittedly though it's not a brilliant connection lol but i still play online with hardly any interuptions :)

so is this cable still alright to use?
