Connecting A Wired Network Problem Ok, Iv got a laptop (Which i will use as the main computer), A desktop, pc which will be used as a secondary computer in which the internet will be sent to via ethernet cables. I went on this site which i thought made it pretty clear to me on what i had to do http://compnetworking.about.com/od/...ork-Diagrams/Wired-Router-Network-Diagram.htm (but obviously it didnt) Thinking i knew what i had to do so i purchased; 1x Linksys RT31P2 Ethernet Router (1 Internet Port, 2 Phone Ports, 3 Ethernet Ports) 2x 0.5m Patch Straight Newtowrk Cable CAT5e RJ45 1x 25m Patch Straight Ethernet Network Cable CAT5e RJ45 1x 30m Patch Straight Ethernet Network Cable CAT5e RJ45 So when they finally arrived and i had opened them all this is what i did. I took the phone line cable out the back of my router I took one of the 0.5m ethernet cables and put it in the INTERNET SLOT in the back of my router (fitted fine), then tried to put the other end in the empty slot in the back of my modem (didnt fit!) So i thought right, seen as though my modem is only USB ill try putting the other end of my ethernet cable into the back of my PC and it fitted perfect. I then took either my 30m or 25m cable and put it in one of my ETHERNET SLOTS in my router. Walked the other cable right upstairs and plugged it into the ETHERNET PORT on the back of my desktop. I thought id done it! So i ran the network wizard, this is how i did it; (LAPTOP) 1. I opened Windows Control Pannel and clicked Network Connections 2. Clicked SET UP OR CHANGE YOUR HOME OR SMALL OFFICE NETWORK 3. When the wizard opens i clicked next to move through the introductory screens 4. On the next page i chose the option which said something like "This computer will connect directly to the internet and other computers will connect to this comluter etc etc" top one i think 5. Entered the discription for PC on the next page, clicked next 6. Enterned a name for my network, clicked next 7. Chose not to share files and printer 8. Kept on clicking next till the end of the wizard (DESKTOP) For the desktop i kept everything the same but for 4. i selected the one saying something like this computer will connect to the internet through another computer or something I've pinged both PC's and they arenot taslking to each other So i really dont know what to do! Please Help! -Josh
Windows networking nightmares.. I have them at night.. Check in this order.. My network places>connections (should say connected-firewalled and give a speed.. When there right click and select properties, then check tcp/ip settings...usually last on the list.. highlight it and again select properties... Check the numbers carefully. If using a router select "get settings automatically" (DHCP) On the internet connected machine find where it says "share this internet connection" and enable it. Firewall... don't ask, just have a mess with exceptions and see if anything happens. check it out.. (sorry I'm a geekgirl too) http://www.geekgirls.com/windowsxp_home_network.htm Something not mentioned.. check in device manager that your ethernet card is enabled (use this device=yes) and modem disabled.
@rcrockett so looking at the picture you posted my problem is i cant connect my router to my modem with the right sort of cable, is there anyway to get round this? atm my network is like this Internet -> Laptop -> Router -> Desktop but thats the only way i can do it seen as though the cable doesnt fit in my modem, ahh! -Josh
If i bought a adsl router/modem, would i still have to connect it to my modem using an ethernet cable or would my network look totally different from the diagram rcrockett drew -Josh
