Connecting laptop to desktop

    I want to remote access my desktop via my laptop through the internt while I'm away from home. Can anyone suggest a free program that will let me transfer files. I've looked around but can only find subscription based software. I'm running Windows Vista on both computers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
