How can I make it possible to access my PC from another PC away from home? I have a bunch of games, music, and other files on my desktop, that I don't have on my laptop, and when I go away for a few days I would like to play games, listen to music or whatever. I don't have that much room on my laptop to store everything, so thats why I was wondering. I do have internet on my laptop when I go away, so do I need to setup a network or something?

not 100% sure, but in order to play a game, you need to have all of its components (like files) on the computer also. You also have to make sure that you have the video memory and all that stuff.

if you want to access your pc from whereever you are in the world the easiest way is to use a program called "NOIP" you have to register with no-ip.com and you then get to create a free website address (yay)
usually a whatever.hopto.org address. once youve signed up to the site and have set up your free net address you download the noip program and run through the setup (it explains itself as you go)

once noip is setup you just need to turn on remote desktop (make sure your windows username has a password or it wont work).

once thats done you can go to anywhere in the world (pretty much) and go to the remote desktop on that computer and type in your whatever.hopto.org in the connect box and click connect and all being well you should be prompted to login to your home pc

pm me if you need any help with this

youll need a pretty fast connection to the internet for this to work well. im not sure if you can use it for playing games but you can definately use it for music and video files

thats cool, i might have to try that. So you can set a password though, right? Like I dont want to make one and have other people just randomly use my computer. LOL.

anybody will be able to remote desktop to your pc using the hopto.org (if you go round telling ppl what it is) but nobody will be able to login unless they happen to know your windows username and password

hey SypherTek, is that service free? I looked on no-ip.com but pretty much all costs $ per year. Could you please do a direct link to this software. Thanks

Thanks SypherTek! I'm going to have to really look into this. The only thing I would worry about is what redhatman said about others getting on the desktop. I'm sure there's gotta be someway to break the Windows login and password feature, as much as I want to hope not, but Windows isn't exactly fool-proof!

Yeah, I'm registered too, but I cant seem to access it with my other computer. I set up a password to logon to Windows with and set my computer to Remote Access, also. It comes up a big red screen saying "401 Authorization Required".

you should be running no-ip in order for it to work. make sure that the little face next to your hopto.org is at the least smiling or wearing some sunglasses if its not then theres a problem with your setup.

you dont type your hopto.org in internet explorer by the way if that what youve been trying.
you need to got start>programs>accesories>communications>remote desktop connection. type your w/e.hopto.org in the computer box and hit connect. if your setup properly and are allowing incoming desktop connections on your comp then it should bring up a box so that you can log in.

to make sure your allowing incoming remote desktop requests right click on the my computer icon and go to properties then click on the remote tab and make sure the tick boxes are checked.

    SypherTek,
I turned on No-IP and my little face is smileing and has rosey red cheeks. Is that good? I tried doing what you suggested and it won't connect. But when I type the IP address in the computer box, it connects. I have my No-IP settings at DNS Host(A), then it gives me an IP address, no group assigned, not allowing wildcards, no offline settings, and no MX Record. When I serch for my domain on No-IP.com, it says "This domain is already taken. Click here for more info." So I clicked it and it says, "Results for this domain. This domain appears unregistered." and underneath that it says "Not Found".

A quick ?. When I access my desktop through NO-IP with my laptop, can someone else use the desktop PC at the same time? I know using the "Remote Desktop" feature it won't let you. Just wondering.

all the no ip does is update your hopto.org with the ip address you get when you sign on to the net. its exactly the same as remote desktoping on a local network so unless you have windows server 2003 its just good old one at a time remote desktoping
