Hi there, Looking for a solution to allow me to connect my RS232 cable to my PC which does not have a serial port. In the past I had no problem connecting the RS232 cable to my PC, but after getting a new PC i have discovered it does not have a serial port. I am trying to use the GTROM software to allow me to download a new bin file to my stb but as far as I am aware you can only connect RS232 cable to a PC with a serial port. I have recently purchased a usb to 15 pin adaptor to see if I could connect the Rs232 cable via usb but dont appear to be having much luck. Any ideas anyone? Many thanks, Steve.

When I go into Device Manager, then Ports (COM & LPT), the adapter shows up as COM1. When I try to upload "Channel Data File" using the GTROM software it will not let me upload to my PC. It always says Flash Update Failed. I have selected the correct COM port when using the GTROM software. Any ideas please, Steve
you say you bought a usb 15 pin adapter,did you get a 9 pin with it?Are you on vista?if so its a bit of a nightmare to flash,works for some but not for the majority. Try doing a search on the forum as there is lot's of info regarding this issue including the use of pci cards.It's a different box but have a look in the eurovox folder under my pic it may be helpfull.
Thanks for the responses so far! I'm using Vista. I did previously say I was using a 15 pin adaptor which was a mistake. Its actually a 9 pin RS232 to USB 2.0 adaptor. Sorry about that. So would you advise to maybe install a serial port pci card instead? Maybe the adaptor method was doomed to failure? Cheers, Steve
Just tried plugging into my laptop that uses xp. My laptop does not have a serial port either (as most don't) so I had to connect the rs232 cable to the laptop via the usb 2.0 to rs232 adaptor which i bought recently. Again no joy! it recognises on my laptop that I have plugged in the rs232 cable on COM1. Still wont let me upload the channel data file to my pc. Im starting to think that the credit crunch will never go away, oops, i mean, i'm starting to think i will never resolve this problem. Any more suggestions?
ASSIGNING A COMPORT WITH USB ADAPTER Problems with your PC/Laptop not recognising your box. To see which port your USB adapter is connected to, connect your USB adapter and follow the following instructions: 1. Go to the Start Menu 2. Right click on "My Computer" 3. Select "Properties" 4. Click on the "Hardware" tab 5. Click on "Device Manager" 6. Click the + sign next to "Ports (COM & LPT)" 7. One of the listed ports should indicate which port your USB adapter is connected to (e.g. COM1, COM2, COM3, etc.) 8. Go back to your map software program that you use to transfer data and make sure it is looking at the correct port. 9. You should be able to transfer data once the correct port is selected If you need drivers go here http://www.gilsson.com/usb_drivers_download.htm Follow my advice to step 7. Locate your USB Adapter (port *) Right click on that port and select properties. Then select port settings, then select advanced. At the bottom of that tab will be a drop down box with the port selected (port * in your case). Use the drop down to select another port (eg 1, 2 or 3). If the port you want to use is already allocated to something else, you can use the same procedure to reassign that port after you have finished. Save the selections in the usual way. The USB converter will be permanently assigned to the port you selected.
