I have a satalite hooked to my tv via s-video cable and audio cables on av1
I also have a dvd recorder/vcr combo unit hooked up to my tv via componate video cables and audio cables on av4
I wanted to hook up my satalite through my dvd recorder then to my tv to record the odd show or 2 the problem is the dvd recorder has to be on in order to watch satalite, which means the fan on the recorder is always on

Can I do the following ?

keep my current set up, (dvd to tv on av4) (satalite to tv on av1) but run rca (R,W,Y) cables from my satalite to the dvd recorder for the few times I want to record a show.

Will running rca and s-video out of the satalite at the same time screw up my recption .Sorry for the long question
    dvd is a Sanyo DRW-1000
    Satalite is a expressVu 3100
tv is a magnavox 51MP392H 51" rear projection

Don't have the expressVu 3100, so I don't know how the ouputs work. I have a Dish Network system but as an example.

I can run RCA to a TV video 1 input for TV viewing. run a RF cable to a combo DVD VCR and than RCA to a TV vedio 2 input. [The recorder will only record what the satellite reciever is tuned to]
I can run s videc [by your post you can also run composite] A problem can occure with the audio as you have to uue a Y connector on the audio.
I'd give it a try. you cant hurt anything.
If it does not work corectly You could do this.
Is assumes that you want the combo unit off most of the time.

Get a Video/Audio switch [WalMart, Radio Shack etc]
The switch is a pass through so input/output makes no difference.
Connect the satellite receiver to the common [output] jacks.
Connect Switch A or 1 to your TV Video 1.
Connect Switch B or 2 to your DVD/VCR
Connect your DVD/VCR to TV Video 2
Using this connection for TV, with the combo unit off, you could just leave the switch at 1 and the TV on video 1
To record put the switch on 2 and the TV on video 2 you could record and watch TV with the combo unit on

I use an A/V S-Video selector box which I got at Walmart for about $20.00 or $30.00. I can hook up 4 seperate components to it. They all hook into it, then 1 set of cables (A/V and S-Video) goes out to the TV. Then you just choose 1 of 4 buttons according to which device you want to use.

On another note .... I also have Directv. If I want to record something from the satellite with the DVD Recorder I plug the cables into it. If I want to use the DVD/VCR Combo to record something I plug the cables into that. I am always switching the cable around depending on what I want to record with. Sometimes I even hook the DVD Recorder to the DVD/VCR Combo if I want to back up a tape or DVD. This can get tedious, but I have it where I can get to them failry easily. I know this sounds crazy, but I do this because I'm picky about the quality of the recordings and I want a direct line to the device I'm using.

I'm sure none of this makes sense. I hope it helped at least some. :)

I'm not sure what it is you are switching It seems that your TV service is Directv. With proper equipnent it shouldnt be necessary to do all that cable swaping.

Well, it's hard to explain it all in typed words without showing you what I mean.

My Directv is going to both the DVD Recorder and the DVD/VCR Combo. However, if I want to record from VCR/DVD Combo to the DVD Recorder or vice versa I swicth some of the wires around so the 2 machines will directly link to each other. I probably need another wire or 2 but there are so many wires already.

PS. I think in my first post above I didn't exaplain it right. Again, it's hard to explain it in types words. Sorry about that. :)
I think my second post above explains it much better.

I agree that trying to explain a hook up and the wiring can and is a pain

Is the combo a recorder both VHS and DVD or is it VHS record and DVD play. If record only on VHS do you have a need to record DVD to VHS and won't the combo unit do that?

Yes, it's a DVD/VCR Combo and only the VCR records. Actually, I haven't had the need to record from DVD to VHS. Probably never will either, but you got the general idea. Yep, typing this stuff out and understanding it isn't always easy.

    Glad its working for you

    Equipment Used

    Satellite receiver
Go video combo unit. VCR play/record, DVD play
    Ilo DVD RHD04
    TV LCD multiple input

This is a connection I am using. [ RCA Jacks] It would be similar to yours

    Satellite Receiver to Go Video
    Go Video to ilo recorder
Ilo recorder to TV Video 1

With this connection I can view the program that is on the satellite receiver and record if wanted. The TV can be turned off. To view the TV the Combo and DVD recorder must be power on

If I wanted have the Combo and recorder to be power off while watching TV. [As described in my prior post] .
I can use a switch and connect the satellite receiver straight through to TV input 1
Using a switch I can go to the combo, the DVD recorder than to TV input 2

Using this equipment in line with the receiver and power on results in a picture to the TV. Any use of either the combo unit or recorder will result in that unit being displayed on the TV. Example; If I play a VHS or a DVD, It will show on the TV. If I record a program and use a timer setup this will display the setup choices and than revert back to the TV until the timer takes over; If just recording a program I can just press record and still view the program.

This should work with most equipment.Keep in mind that some equipment operates a little different but the result should be the same.

The connection would depend on your preference, Either way with your equipment using the method outlined in my previous and present post should result in a system that will suit your needs without all the cable changes and a cleaner setup

I hope that I’ve helped. Feel free to ask questions.

I have everything hooked to my bedroom TV. Mine is like this:

Stereo RCA older TV, excellent quality and reliable.
A/V S-Video switch box with 4 inputs and 1 output.
    Directv satellite box.
    DVD Recorder
    DVD/VCR Combo (DVD plays only)

1 satellite box w/2 separate Satellite outputs going to DVD Recorder & DVD/VCR Combo. I can record from satellite using either device which is good. I use DVD Recorder for movies and VCR for my TV shows.
DVD Recorder output to input 1 on Switch Box.
DVD/VCR Combo output to input 2 on Switch Box.
Output on switch box to TV.
Output from TV to stereo for stereo sound.
DVD Recorder & DVD/VCR Combo - I hook the 2 together when I need to copy something but don't leave them hooked together all the time.

DVD Recorder and DVD player from the combo unit are broadcast through my S-Video channel (S-Video channel 90) on the TV. The VCR broadcast through A/V channel 91 on the TV. Or if I am copying something with the 2 recorder/player units I can put the TV on channel 4 and still watch the satellite. Also I don't have to have either device turned on just to watch satellite. I can turn everything off and just leave the satellite box and TV on and see it through channel 4 using coax. Not as good of quality, but at least I have the option to turn everything off and still be able to watch the satellite.

My living room TV - 36 inch JVC - I only have basic connections to a satellite box, DVD Player, a VCR, and a stereo. I don't do my recording in there.

Sounds like you haxe the necessary equipment and its working ok for you but you don't really have to connect or disconnect any cables or use the coax.

No, I don't have to use coax, but I like having the option of turning everything off except for the satellite and TV. Any other way and I'd have to have either the VCR Combo on all the time or the DVD recorder on all the time since the satellite is hooked to those 2 things. Right?

    NO;
    Read my previous posts

What kind of inputs does the TV have.
In the system I'm using, the input to the Combo Go Video is with a RF coax switch, that can go direct to a TV if wantsd. There are a lot of ways to hook up a system, without swapping cable

In the systen I use. at present, the sat reciever has RCA, Svideo, and coax outputs.
The TV being used in a sewing only has a coax input. it also has a game input [RCA jacks]. I connected the sat with RCA cables to the game port and set the TV to Game. It works fine.
An RF cable runs to another room [that is for a computer and tapeing] and connects to a RF switch, this switch connects to a combo unit that goes [ with RCA to a ilo RHD04 and then to a TV / Monitor] The RF switch could go to the Monitor if I wanted.I use it for blank leaders
You could do something similar using outputs that are anailable.

This TV, though it is a great set, is 15 years old and only has 1 set of inputs using A/V & S-Video and a coax, then it has red and white audio going out for stereo. No extra game jacks, etc. The only switching of wires I do is when I want to hook the DVD R to the VCR Combo. I prefer to record DVD to DVD using S-Video for better quality and there aren't enough S-Video jacks to leave them hooked together all the time. Well, it works for me. :)
