Ok I have bought (used) like 6 xbox (original) systems in the past 3 months. I softmod them and give them to friends kids as gifts. I keep the extra games and controllers for my own kids. I have six children. At least a dozen controllers in 3 months just quit working. Some are certain buttons stop but 8 of them just wont work period. Thumbs, buttons, triggers, nothing. That's 12 controllers in 3 months for no reason it seems just die. I searched these forums and came up with not one single thread, people must just accept it if 1 controller dies. But 12 is a lot at upwards of $10 each. Any suggestions or causes?
They do just die.. if they are used then who knows how they have been treated by the previous owners. How about the ones you hand on with the softmods? .. do they die also or is it just on this particular xbox. One thing to really mention.. don't wrap the wires around the controllers.. or if you must start from the controller end and leave a loop of spare cable where the wire emerges from the gromit thingy.. the wires have a nasty habit of breaking at that point If it's on just the one box you could have a fault in the PSU which is throwing more than +5v down the controller lines. The controller wiring is as follows.. same as usb except for a yellow strobe line which I guess is for lightguns or something. red +5v black -ground 0v other pair.. usually green and white .. data .. usually will read about 2.5v each with relation to ground and nothing between them but that's on ac range on a scope.. 2.5v (+-5v at some clock speed or other?) ttl logic data line I suspect. Digital electronics is too modern for me. useful?
Thanks, I cant be sure if its the same box or not, I have 3 boxes, 6 kids. One is a 3 year old that actually can play but might mistreat them when Im not around. I will probably find another bundle used and buy more but it urks me that 12 died in 90 days.and never when I play them just when I go to the kids room and get them.
Yeah.. the kids are throwing them around. Only one I have seen actually break somebody had thrown up on and the eewwwww had rotted the pots. I used a dead one (shorted embedded chip on the board) for salvage parts after washing the puke out in the sink.. lovely job.
MMMM my breakfast tastes so much better now...ha, Im about to look right now for some more used ones Im down to 1 controller for 6 kids.
Before you buy more just check the continuity of the cables. normally they work or they don't.. ones with a few buttons or sticks not working sometimes respond to being opened up and investigated.. I would make a guess that from a big stash of broken ones you should be able to get a couple of them working my mix and match.
