convert a DVD to an avi file???

here's my problem...i have a DVD that i bought from someone in Europe....it won't play in my dvd player but will play in my computer....it's probably a PAL version DVD...i'm thinking i need to read the DVD and change the dvd files to AVI ????? and then take the AVI file and convert it to NTSC????...any help would be appreciated...not sure how to do this or what files i need???

I had DVD files (*.VOB / *.IFO) files that were PAL and I converted them to NTSC using DVDSanta.

It worked out good for me !
