convert avi to dvd...software and time????

Just wondering what is the best software out there, that can convert avi file to dvd, and how long it take???

Might as well get this out of the way first.....do a search and find the answer in the guides or the forum. Now to my point. The best methods will take a while on your normal computer. Now personally I haven't done such so I don't really know, but expect to have to set it up overnight. A while back I stumbled upon a really quick and painless way of throwing avi files on dvd (may ahve bene this site so search for the program I'm gonna tell you about). It's called VSO divxtodvd. Now with this program I cna convert an avi in under 2 hours. As for quality....don't expect perfection (particularly in really dark scenes). However, I go nuts with low quality video and this method is perfectly watchable on my 52inch projection tv so it does work well. Now the other neat thing is that most movies come out to be a little over 2gb. Do a dvd re-authoring of those files and you cna toss 2 movies on one 4.7gb dvd with good quality. I figure it's liek the fast food of video converting. Quick, easy, and in large quantities. So if you're willing to make a small compromise in video quality then you cna make some nice double feature dvds and save some money. Byt the way I do keep all my avi files on my hdd as I don't want my only copy of the video to be one of my dual movie dvds. But yea run a search for that program. I think it's even free.

I use VSO DivxToDvd all the time and I don't notice anything bad about the quality of the outputs. It stays the same as it was when it was an AVI

 

I only use 2 programs when converting avis and subs to dvd.This works works with all files!!!!

Before using these programs i tried all the other ones out there: avi2dvd, DVDSanta and the rest but i had
sync probs with audio and subs but no more probs now!
Heres what i do and it works every time!

Install a program called VobSub as this will force the subtitles.
Install Canopus Procoder 2.This prog supports all files!!!!!
Make sure when you unpack the download that you have the 2 avis and the subs files in exactly the same folder.
There is no need to join these either as Canopus will do this for you.
Start Canopus Procoder and put a tick in the stitch box as this will join the files together,
then choose a target which will be dvd PAL or whatever you wish to do then click convert and choose a path for output
if you don't choose a path then the default path is my documents. Then hit convert! watch the first 5 mins you should
see the subtitles being tranconded with the movie, if so then unclick preview as this will slow down convertion.
Encoding takes between 4 to 8 hrs but its so worth it! The finished result is a high quality dvd with subs!!!
Its as Simple as that.

 

i agree, vso divx to dvd retains the quality of the avi you put in.


it realy is a excellent tool. makes me laugh at all the other programms that have convoluted menue systems and pretentious options that doa worse job.

vso is a smart programm, and it takes me about 40 mins to transcode a 1 hr 30 min film.

you can use vso to encode more than one film also,. if it goes oversize a bit, use dvd shrink.


some people though, just like to be seen to be using a complicated application for the sake of being complicated, and these people wil naturaly flame this app, becasue it denies them there bragging rights and it intimidates them a bit.


computer use is all about ease of use in my opinion. 9/10 for vso divx 2 dvd.

 

Hi all thanks for the steer on this vso divx is fantastic, it's by far the easiest software I've found that work quickly and easily. One obvious thing I am missing is how to put two fims on one DVD. When I put them into it I just get the first film and not the second one.

Sorry didn't explain that well and as you will have picked up I'm new to this. I've got two divx avi files converted. Each has a few files associated and it (.vop, .bup, .ifo files) will only let me bring in one set at a time. It recognises an increase in size to just under 4gb, but when I burn them all it will play the first but the second is nowhere to be seen. Also I can't work out how to get a title or header onto the dvd+rw, so when I play them it just starts automatically with the first one. When it gets to the end it just loops back to the start

 

which will only let you bring in one file at a time?


i thought you meant how to convert 2 films at a time.

if you want to include 2 avi films to be converted to dvd, you use vso and when importing the avi's to be converted you hold down ctrl while selecting the 2 avi files.


vso wil then make a video_ts folder and all the corresonding files for each of them converted avi's. inc, your vobs ifo's and bups'

if the files dont oversize for dvd, then you use nero to make a 'dvd video' using its dvd template.


then just 'burn compilation'


and your done.

without any menues of course, just press 'title' on your dvd players remote to switch films.

if its oversized a bit, use 'dvd shrink' to compress it a bit to fit. easy to use application, and its free too

 

One problem with two films on one dvd is that it usually throws the computer off (i never watch them on my comp). But i've never seen problems on dvd players hooked up to TV sets. The key to being able to throw two sets of dvd files on one dvd is using the reauthor setting in dvd shrink. It'll let you select the folder with the files in it then drag over "title 1"......now once that's one select another folder and drag over the "title 1" from that folder. I'm horrible wiht trying to explain things so if you really can't get it i'll try and get some screen shots. Now I don't recommend this if by putting two movies on you have to compress alot. But if each movie comes out around 2gb then it makes sense to not waste disk space. Yea I finally tried another program to compare with vso. And guess what, quality doesn't really get any better. I jsut assumed that with vso there ahd to be some sort of catch. Unfortunately I don't kwno fo a way to add in a menu or anyhting with my current method, i'm gonna try working on that part.

 

i use avi2dvd 1.3.0beta and it makes a movie with subtitles in 1hour and 25minutes. With nice quality. You can even do multiple jobs now.. and it gives a low size too, where you can use Dvd shrink re-author feature to put 2 movies. Actually my next project will be 3 movies in one dvd. Because the quality looks ok, and i had free space in the dvd for one more movie..

 

hi, I think winavi video convert is your best choice to convert avi to dvd http://www.winavi.com/avi-to-dvd.htm. Generally, it only takes you 45 minutes to complete this job, while with stunning video and audio quality!

 

that would depend on your pc stats and chip set.If you have a generally up to date machine it will take 45 mins to encode your avi but if your machine is older it will take longer

I've used DivxtoDVD and it's really good, giving its price (free)

Now I use Winavi to convert AVIs to DVD (it can even encode to MPG-2) and then DVD lab pro. WinAVI encodes pretty fast and DVD lab pro is a powerful authoring tool.

In other words: DivxtoDVD 2 hours (and no subtitles) - WinAVI+DVDlabpro less than 1 hour

 

I have been using VSO DivxToDVD for a while now and it has always worked great and is very fast. But the past few movies I have tried to use it on have turned out really bad. I tried the Green Mile and it kept giving timestamp discontinuity error messages about 5 times a second and the time it says it will take to convert increases up to around 4 hours but then stops after only about 30 minutes and says conversion is complete when it clearly isn't. Also, Mr.3000 burned with constant skipping and eventually the audio being way off and King Arthur burned with very very poor quality when all of these movies play fine and are of great quality on my computer.
If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it.

@ JordanC7 ; whats the media you are using?

 

I honestly don't know exactly what kinda of media they are. I downloaded the movies using WinMX and Azureus and they are just files without any properties or anything. Mr.3000 is a dvdrip which I used WinRAR to extract into a folder. That's the first movie where I had to use WinRAR so maybe I am doing something wrong. The file I extracted plays fine on my computer using Nero ShowTime and it has MPEG Layer-3 audio, that is the only properties I know about that file and I have nothing on the other two. They other two movies were just 1 file of about 700 MB each with no program associations or properties, but when I do choose Nero ShowTime they play fine on my computer I just can't get them to work with DivxToDVD and to burn right.
I'm really confused because I've never had a problem with DivxToDVD before except with one other movie I had that kind of skipping a bit. It was Van Wilder and no matter how many times I burned it or re-used DivxToDVD on it everytime there was loud almost tearing sounds throughout the movie but at different times on each burn and not very frequent so it's not like it was just certain parts of the movie. Mr.3000 was the same way with these loud kind of tearing sounds but a lot worse and frequent making the movie unwatchable.

 

have you seen a program called dvd identifier.Just google for it.When you do have it run one of your discs through it and post the results

 

WINAVI is by far the best PERIOD! No need to use other software to check your picture or sync of voice or whatever the easiest interface 1 click almost. REMEMBER you get out what you put in so if you have a crappy AVI, XVID or MPEG or whatever you WILL produce a HIGH QUALITY piece of crap or a nice shiny coaster. I had issues with this software when I first tried it jumpy picture, sound off sync etc. So I tried VSO's SLOOOOOWWWWEEER then WINAVI and same result's thought all this stuff was crap then I decided that it would be a good idea to try ONLY converting the movies and not be downloading 20 things from P2P Source, surfing the net ,chatting online all while listening to my music through WMP10.The results were incredible EVERYTHING in sync and fast ran WinAVI and VSO's DivxToDVD simultaneously converting the same movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (well one copy each) and WinAVI finished about 30 minutes sooner "flawless". VSO "flawless picture" sound off sync. WinAVI is the WINNER.I am converting 750 to 900 MB file from start to finished burned disk in less then 1 hour, most of the time it takes 20 minutes to convert and 20 minutes to burn, VSO is about 1 hour convert plus 20-30 burn.I am using a P4HT 3 Ghz.800fsb,1GB RAM,16X Dual Layer TSST Burner, 8X DVD-R's. Hope this helps.

 

there is a known bug that divxtodvd makes a small square box in center of screen for certain files after its encoded them!

i use tmpgenc plus or avi2dvd or film machine or mainconcept or divxtodvd, but not all do subs avi2dvd and film machine do they are free apps.
