Hi anyone know how I can convert a mkv file that uses h264? I tried using virtualdubmod but it couldn't extract the video
Install AVISynth and load that file with a script which uses the AVISynth filter named DirectShowSource. You have do study a little that powerful program, though. Go to http://avisynth.org/ For example, from http://avisynth.org/index.php?page=DirectShowSource:
I found the easist way is to use winavi and convert it to a dvd. then I use dvdfab to convert the dvd to avi. I get better quality making it a dvd first. hope that helps you
I'm trying to convert h264 to avi as well, but winavi isn't working for me. I load the file, select the conversion and when it starts I get either a 'division by zero' error (whatever that means) or I just get a "winavi has encountered a problem...etc, etc." error. Should I attempt to load the entire file or should I try demuxing and just loading the video to winavi?
1) Winavi is a piece of crap. 2) Surely converting directly is easiest? 3) DVD uses MPEG-2 which means it is lossy, so you lose quality, not gain it.
Doesn't matter anyway, I already got it figured out. Its not a matter of preserving or improving quality, its just a matter of wanting to get it to DVD.
