I have some movies in avi fromat. Should I convert them to mpeg2 first using TMPEG or can I just import the avi into DVD Lab Pro? Will DVD Lab Pro just convert it for me?

DVDLab Pro is an authoring app, not an encoder.
Encode your avi to elementary streams in tmpgenc plus, then import the video and audio into DVDLab.
