Convert *.vhs files to *.avi,*.mpeg,*.dvd etc.

    Hello! I have some files on my computer that have this (*.vhs) extension...they are actually "save" tapes from a game called Falcon4. I would really like to convert them to (*.avi,*.mpeg,*.dvd)file that can be easily watched with known players.
    For this..
    1) Do I need an external device called VCR (as i read somewhere) ?
    2) Or just a convertion programm would be enough for this...?
    3) Or do i actually need a VCR and a convertion programm??

    I'd be greatfull for any kind of help!

    Unfortunatelly attar, it can't recognise this file with this programm...I have tried some well known converters too but with no luck...
