Hey im sure you guys can answer this question pretty easily. But whenever I convert an avi to dvd with WinAvi and then author it with TMpge DVD author it always seems too big for my tv. Its like it gets stretched out and im not able to see the subtitles. I used the auto button for aspect ration in WinAvi and it read as 720x480. The guide that I used from another website said nothing of changing the settings to make it fit correctly on a tv. Can someone let me know what settings I need to make it fit.

You can"t fix this useing the Settings in WinAVI because WinAVI doesn"t have advanced Resizeing and Aspect Ratio display settings, Very Few Encoders do but Tmpgenc pluss or Tmpgenc Xpress Both have advanced Resize settings, Tmpgenc"s Encodeing Quality is Better than WinAVI But it is a Lot slower.....

You basicly have to add Borders to the Top and Bottom of the Frame so that your TV set Doesn"t Cut off the Part at the Top and Bottom of the Image, Your TV set will allways Cut off from 10 to 15% of the frame on the Ouside edges of the Image because all TV sets have an Overscan area arround the Screen .....

The way you would Resize it with the Borders arround the Edges so that you can see the whole Frame on your TV set would be different for every file depending on your Source Files Resolution and what resolution and Aspect ratio you were encodeing to....

So if you want me to explain how to do this useing Tmpgenc Pluss/Express then you will have to tell me the Resolution of your Source File and the Resolution you were encodeing to and then I can explain what settings to use and what to set the settings too so you can see the whole Frame on your TV set....

    Cheers

Well the reason im using WinAvi is because Tmp pro keeps crashing on my machine. Im done bothering with that particular file. The new one im trying to encode is 352x288. I will most likely use an aspect ratio of 4:3 like ive been doing with all my burned dvds.

Well with this Particular 352+288 file You shouldn"t resize at all(well not to 720+576) because the Resolution is very low and resizeing it to 720+576 will totally ruin the Quality...

You should keep the Resolution at 352+288 which is 100% DVD Compliant and will give you better quality because it won"t have to be resized all the way up to 720+576 and You can author DVD"s useing this resolution with Tmpgenc DVD Author....
The Advantage to useing this resolution to make DVD"s is that You can fit over 6 hours of Video on a Single DVD useing this resolution....

So try encodeing the 352+288 AVI file to a 352+288 Mpeg-2 file with a Bitrate of about 1500kbs to 2000kbs and then author the Mpeg-2 file to DVD with Tmpgenc DVD author...
If you have some other Low resolution AVI files you might as well encode them also because you will be able to fit 3 or 4 Full Movies on a DVD Like this....

I only recomend useing this DVD Format when you have Low resolution Source Files or Low Quality High resolution source files, this is because the quality you can achieve is limited by the resolution but it sure beats resizeing Low resolution files to a High resolution ....

If you were to use Tmpgenc to encode this File and it had Subtitles and you don"t want them cut off when watching the Movie to fix it you would first load in your file and then go to "Settings" to the "Advanced" tab and were it says "Video Arrange Method" set it to "Center (Custom Size)" and then set the Custom Size to "320+256" which will put a 16 pixel border arround the Image while would make it so you saw the whole frame while watching on TV.....

    Well Good Luck....Cheers

Hey Minion thanks for the audio decompressor. But is there any other tool besides Tmpgenc that I can use for my problem with the picture coming out too large on my tv. And exactly what formula are you using to figure out how many pixels you have to add subtract from original avi to get it too look perfect? The last resolution I gave you was 352x288, and you said I should make it 320x256 but this is pal compliant and im ntsc. So would I go up to 704x480 - 720x480 or go down to 352x480 - 352x240 which are all ntsc compliant? And the current file im working with is 512x384; do I go up or down with the resolution to make it ntsc compliant. And you also told me I should take the original file I had, the 352x288 one and make it 320x256. Am I at least correct in seeing that you want me to take 16 pixels from each side to make up for overscan? Im so comfused right now and really appreciate the help.

If you just did what I explained for you to do you would have all of your Questions answered.....Just Try it even for a Few minites of an encode and see the Result and then you will understand what I was talking about...

The Settings I told you to do will make it so there is a Border arround the Image which will be Cut off by the Overscan instead of the edges of the Video being Cut off....
