    Hi,

I've tried to find an answer to this but no luck so far...

I was wondering what would give me the best quality DVD5 backup:

    1) Shrinking the original DVD (e.g using dvdshrink)

    2) Converting a 720p/1080p mkv bluray rip to DVD (e.g. using convertxtodvd)

The reason I ask is that the HD mkv rips look better than the original dvds (i think), so wouldn't they produce a better end result?

    Thanks!

The HD MKV may look better than the DVD, but it doesn't look better than the
    Blu-ray .

I think they may turn out about the same. A DVD9 compressed to DVD5 will lose some quality; an mkv has been transcoded from ts (presumably) to x264 and then to transcode it back into another mpeg format may be just as lossy.

Personally I would just shrink the original if you have it as it only involves a single compression not two different transcodes.
