Converting a 3gb DVD video folder to a 1gb less .AVI file?

    I ripped a DVD movie to my HDD with no compression it's around 2.5 - 3gb, I want to convert this to a 1gb or less .avi file (I know the quality disadvantages) so I can give it to a friend on a 1gb flash stick, what program and how do I do I do this, help me out man.
