    Hi.

I have an AVI file with AC3. I want to convert the AC3 to MP3 so that I can watch the files on my Archos AV500 with sound.

Is there any way to do this. So far I can only work out how to extract the audio from the AVI file and change it to MP3.

I can't work out how to put it back without synch problems.

Maybe there is a program which does all of this?

This is NOT going to be a simple matter!
Problem number one is that you will lose quality - and lots of it.
Dolby Digital (AC3) is already like DVD-Video version of Mp3 and throws away 11/12 of the original audio. To make it into an MP3 you have to decode to WAV, and then re encode to AC3. This will then throw away another 11/12 of what was left, and the artifacts will be gruesome.
It can be done though, but watch the sample rates too. AC3 will be at 48KHz.

What you need is the badly named ImToo DVD Audio Ripper.

    Why the conversion?
Won't the player play a Dolby Digital file? (I don't know what an Archos AV500 is!)

    Thankyou for your response.

In the end I have used goldwave to extract the audio and change it to MP3 and used VirtualDubMod to add it the video.

The Archos AV500 is a brilliant handheld portable device which allows you to watch AVI movies. Only problem is it has a limited scope of recognisable formats.

Appreciate the info on the handheld device.
How was the quality hit on that conversion?

The quality conversion was fine for my purposes. Because I am watching tv shows audio isn't that important. I couldn't tell the difference between the AC3 and MP3. Also there were no synch problems which was nice.
