Converting an MP4 file to burn as a DVD Compliant (standalone player) Disc

First, forgive me if this posting is not within the confines for the subject (MP1 & 2) I"m very new to all this. I have an MP4 file which I want to burn to DVD so that it can be played on a standard DVD player.
I downloaded "SUPER" a freeware product because of it's claimed "ease of use". However, the software presents you with alot of choices, which apparently require knowledge of the different configurations / combinations that go into encoding a file for DVD compliance.
For instance, in the first field you select the output container.
The choices are many, ranging from AVI to MP2,3,4 to VOB DVD Compliant and beyond. I chose "VOB DVD Compliant". Which brings me to the second window to choose "Output Video Codec". In this field there are two choices available, MPEG-I and MPEG-II, I've tried with both.
Everytime I select "Encode" it seems like it's doing something and then brings up a window to "Select a Method for VOB File Renaming"...I've tried both "Use the original filename with a VOB extension" and "Use the standard DVD compliant format" - then some things in the application window go blank, and the status next to the MP4 file I'm trying to convert says, "canceled"
Does anyone have any experience with this application to give me direction as to what I may be doing wrong, or any suggestions for other Freeware that's easier to use, more reliable, etc.?

 

You want VOB DVD compliant and mpeg2. The naming makes no difference. If you have trouble remember there are 2 encoders to try plus 'Use Direct Show'. So you have 3 ways to try it, one of them might work.

What exactly does GSpot say this MP4 file is?

Thanks for responding. I"m assuming "G Spot" (after checking it out)is for when you have trouble with a file playing (No Codec for it). That's not the problem I'm having. The application "super" will play the file.

The two encoders ffMpeg and MEncoder both give the same result:
some things in the application window go blank, and the status next to the MP4 file I'm trying to convert says, "canceled".
I'm assuming that 'direct show' only deals with playing the file, which again, isn't the problem.

Do you think that maybe something with the install went wrong or is there some other setting in the application I need to make?
There are so many fields with selections, maybe there's some other adjustment that needs to be made?
Assuming I can't get this to work, are there any other freeware application that you could suggest that may be a little more user friendly?

You make way too many assumptions, which is a big mistake when trying to troubleshoot a problem.

GSpot is an informational utility. It provides a ton of info regarding all aspects of the vid which very often help in determining a course to take.

You assumed wrong.

I faced the same problem few days back. I had tried couple of softwares to convert an MP4 file to be played onn DVD player. I would suggest you to use NeroVision which is part of Nero 7 Premium. Here you can give the MP4 file as input and it will do everything for you. You don't have to worry about any settings etc. It will do all that. I had tried many softwares before this but none came out well. But Nero solved the problem. Hope this helps you out.
