I occasionally use old SmartRipper to rip Zone 2 or 3 to harddrive - usually with the result of eliminating the zone hassle. I used to just leave the files in VOB format, and burn to DVD as data files or convert to VCDs, before DVD burners became available/affordable. None of this caused any problems, except for some irregularity in the voice track (a VOB might play once with Japanese, later with English, etc.) - but I never experienced those irregularities on any of my machines. OKAY. Now, I find myself wanting to burn/convert some VOBs into DVD player format. I have Nero 6-something. I get an error message dumping me and a message box claiming I need to upgrade to Dolby, but I wonder if the burn would succeed even with that plugin. the Dolby msg may just be free advertising from our friends at Nero. I don't have any Nero user guide and I haven't found any customer support at their site even minimally helpful. I am NOT eager to get into the hassle of using multiple programs like the old DECSS, DVD2AVI, and TMGEnc programs I've used for creating VCDs (i.e., reducing visual quality) - just playing the VOBs is easy enough. But the VOBs are big and I'd like to squeeze a playable film on one DVD, rather than two. Okay, is there any real point to buying anything from Nero? Does anyone think it'll work satisfactorily? I'm not interested in pirating - just in being able to show some other friends studying Japanese some good conversation examples - often from documentaries - but these friends don't always have machines that'll play vob files.
i am no expert but i use dvd shrink to remove unwanted features on a dvd and it shrinks the size a good amount. i dont know if anyone else will agree with me. hope i helped a little bit! {{{{[[[I occasionally use old SmartRipper to rip Zone 2 or 3 to harddrive - usually with the result of eliminating the zone hassle. also, forgot to mention: make a folder named VIDEO_TS and move all the VOB's/IFO's/BUP's into that folder to make it a valid launchable dvd and dvd shrink should recognize it.
