I want to convert my old collection of cassette tapes to mp3 and put them on CDs. It's been a few years since I've done something like this and it used to be very easy. With XP I used the Roxio 5 sound editor and it was a piece of cake to load the audio, edit it to remove gaps, put in file markers, and then save it as a WMA, WAV, MP3, whatever. There was no problem. Now I have Vista and Nero 9 and Roxio 10. I've tried every possible way I can think of in Nero and Roxio, but it's just a PITA. Additionally, they will not save my file markers and it takes 10 times longer to do. HELP !! What the heck am I doing so wrong that I cannot get newer versions of the software to do what the older versions could do?

Audacity .. and don't convert to mp3.. analog sources sound far better than mp3.. it's horribly lossy and sounds bad on cd. I save and clean up and edit in wav lossless.. why convert when you want lossless for cd?

Thanks varnull. I read in another one of your responses to a different post that you recommended Audacity. I have downloaded it and am now giving it a try. I do, however, need to convert all my "Books On Tape" to MP3 and since they are merely someone reading the book, albeit with emphasis, any losses will be minimal. So far I have not figured out how to incorporate Track Markers using Audacity - any clues?

make a marker in the place you want a track to start.. then >tracks>add label at selection ans call it something (I use 00xa/b/c etc)
To dump them as many tracks it's >file>export multiple .. If you want mp3 export you will need the lame mp3 libs.. which can be found from the audacity homepage.

Once again thanks for responding Varnull. The closest thing I can find to what you indicated is Project / Add Label At Selection. Is that the same thing? It kind of looks like it's what I want, but I'm not sure yet.

should be.. I guess again the linux version is laid out a little different.

Try the wiki (hit the help menu at the top and) look for the tutorials on the homepage which have walkthroughs of everything..

This is open source software,.. the help button leads to real help not the windoze troubleshooter waste of time loop XD

    Varnull -

I think I got it. Thanks to your posts I was able to do what I wanted to do. The "Insert Track" thing I couldn't find is that small "football" shaped icon to the left of the "Split Clip" icon on the Sound Editor. All I had to do was click on the waveform where I wanted to insert a track marker and then click on the left "football." The right "football" is the "Remove Track" icon. As tracks are inserted, their name is iterated up one number each time. This is how I remember doing it with Roxio 5. Thanks so much for all your help.
