I am not a newbie to video conversion, but I have to figure this out and I'm hoping my brethren can help.
I left Dish Network this year and no longer get the programming I loved, such as Formula One.
I have a bud who sends me the races but he insists on using .mkv.
I can play it fine on my computers but every time I try to convert it to an .avi (to play on my PS3) or a video_ts (both, so I can watch on my tely instead of a computer screen) my system crashes during the conversion.
I'm using the newest K-Lite codec pack.
I've tried in ConvertXtoDVD, AVS media converter, Virtual Dub, etc... literally any program I could think of and I'm not having any luck.
    Anyone have any similar experiences?
Anyone have a solution if they did?

What do you mean by "crashes" ? Do alarm bells go off? Does the system restart?
Usual cause is that the PC over heated due to the prolonged high cpu (encoding).
Open up the box and blow out the dust.

It's not overheating. I've encoded to two hours at a time and never had a temp. shutdown.
The computer completely shuts down and leaves no error log in either ConvertX or windows event viewer.

Try installing Everest or something similar, and monitor the cpu temps
    during the encode.

I've no idea otherwise, why it would shutdown.
Have you checked thoroughly for malware ?
