I am practicing with the new "Atsuhime" movie out each week. Now I have got the SRT and AVI part down with each episode. I now have the srt files in Japanese and want to redo them into English. If I lived in L.A. S.F. or Honolulu the T.V. station does this. I have a lot of Samurai movies and I want to learn this anyway. Question: What is the best way put the Japanese sub into a text file so I can write my translation. Once I have my tranlation short and concise what is the best way to proceed without screwing up the timing etc. I haven't found any guides on the subject.
The .srt file is a text file that can be opened and edited with notepad. The times are listed for each line of dialog - I assume you replace the existing text with English and save the file.
I really appreciate you writing back. All day I thinking that I'd wasted your time. I discovered of course that it is a text file just after writing. I was so exasperated after downloading so many of these programs and not getting what I wanted. I got both(avi & srt) to show up with the BS player and I convert files with the AVS video converter which does a fair job of burning the disc after conversion. Right, I'm translating a show now, about 36 pages of script. Then I thought I reload it into the BSplayer to see if it fits. Then convert to DVD and watch it. Will it be that easy? I have a bunch of Samurai detective shows called Onehei HanKacho from its run in the 1990's on VHS,is there a way to pull timed dialog from them? Or do I have to rewrite the script and time it out? The AVI and the (samename) .srt file can be played back with most media players to test. Also 'Subtitle Workshop' will load the movie and the .srt file and you can edit the text while the video is playing. After reading your posted guide on Anime using 'AviMUX GUI'. 'Subtitle Workshop', I decided to try the Sub Workshop in place of BS player, it looks professional better to work with. I'm reading through the help menu. Use "Movie" and "Open" to load the avi File and Load an Original for srt? I'm getting atsuhime_18.srt is a bad subtitle or unsupported format.Odd, since it loads with the avi in all the other software and yes they are named the same. atsuhime_18.avi and atsuhime_18.srt in the same atsuhime 18 file. File even has the subtitle workshop logo on the srt and a pix from the film in the avi file. Ya know, this is what I like about computers, going all the way back to Charlie Chaplin. Then my wife says "what have you done all day"! Sorry! Back to the Help Menu...
The srt did load with the message. Beat that. When saving under custom formats click "all formats"...then cancel? odd! They won't be VOB or another format, will they. Actually, once I figure it out more... I see why you like the Subtitle Workshop! I suppose I will look at DVD Flick so I'm on the same page with A.D. the AVS software group has been a good intro to all this...
After looking at the new software the only real problem I'm having is in the Text and Translation areas all I get are ??????. Since I'm translating from Japanese to English. It is a problem. The Movie shows the Japanese char. subtitles. Down in the Text/Trans area, I've tried the char settings, Shift JIS. per 4.1.2 Charsets; and read in the Help about the language directory. The Shift JIS gives me ????, and I didn't see EUC-JP Since Shift JIS is the standard here for JPN what could be hanging my japanese up. I'm just copying it over from notepad.
Is this Subtitle Workshop? I'm out of my depth whewn it comes to anything but English - but there is a setting on the Menu bar where you can select the language of the interface.Would changing that to Japanese help?
