My roomate and I purchased a new computer recently,
its a Dell with an Intel Pentium 3 processor,931 mhz, 384 megs ram.

Anyway when I use convertxtodvd, nero vision, or WINAVI, converting/transcoding a 3 hour mpeg can take anywhere from 6-9 hours. Is there anything I can do to speed this up???

Get a new computer! I find it hard to believe that a new computer comes with a Pentium III. The Processor is to slow, and you don't have enough RAM. That encoding time is probably about right.

i think jxp is right, i would suggest a 2.0gb cpu and 512 ram as a minimum for fast backups or video conversion.
