I have a number of VCD discs..........usually 2 per film. These disc's have a number of directories but it is usually a file called AVSEQ01.DAT that will open a film on my computer. I would like to join the files on these 2 discs together and convert them to an .avi file on my computer. Can anyone suggest some software that will do a job like this? Thanks
Use VCCDGear. On the [vcdgear] screen, choose the command: dat --> mpeg, and save: - AVSEQ01.DAT from the CD1 (directory D:\AVSEQ\ of the VCD) to c:\movie_CD1.MPG; - AVSEQ01.DAT from the CD2 (directory D:\AVSEQ\ of the VCD) to c:\movie_CD2.MPG. Then what do you want to do? I suppose you want to put the joined pieces of the movie on a DVD. If it is so, the autio ((S)VCD standard = 44.1 kHz) must be resampled to DVD standard (48 kHz). You can do simultaneouly the join with Womble MPEG-VCR: a) Open movie_CD1.mpg; b) press the [copy] button and close the window. movie_cd1 will be placed in the video clipboard. c) open movie_CD2.mpg; d) Drag and drop from the clipboard movie_CD1 to movie_CD2. By default, it will be placed at the beginning, do it is corrct. Press OK. e) Press the button to save the joined mpeg (the one which seems a barrel) - e1) Press the [audio] button. Change the sampling rate from 44.1 to 48 kHz. Go back pressing OK. - e2) Now press the [Save] button. Leave the default type and save, once you choosed the file name. f) Now you have a 'hybrid' mpeg: a VCD movie resampled 48 kHz. If you load it with VirtualDub you can make the usual conversion to AVI. See the \guides section. Just a caution. Should you want to make the same with (S)VCD movies you should: 1) use VCDGear mpeg --> mpeg 2) leave the default [MPEG-2 stream] in Womble MPEG-VCR 3) use VIRTUALDUB-mpeg2 instead of VirtualDub, unable to open MPEG-2 files 4) before saving the movie, add 'artificially' a filter, in VirtualDub-MPEG2, which approximates the fact tieh a 480x480/576 SVCD movie is letterboxed to 720x480/576 (an AVI is not): __________________________________________ Video__Filters__Add --> Resize: - new width = 1.5*X - new heigth = Y filter mode: lanczos3 __________________________________________ otherwise the SVCD --> AVI will become a movie like if you saw it 'in a rectangle' (taller than larger) instead of 'in a square.' The DVD players adjust automaticalliy the letterboxing for SVCDs, but don't do that for AVIs.
Many thanks for your help. Actually I want to create unified file that I can put into a program called ImTOO RM Converter. This produces DivX (*.avi) files which I can burn to a DVD disc using Nero. I can often burn 7 or 8 films to 1 Disc. I have downloaded VCD Gear but I can't seem to find the Help file. Do you know if one exists? and it's whereabouts? I really need a recipe type help file ......(ABC style),,,,,, explaining each step. Thanks again for your help....I think this is just the program for me if I can ever get it started.
I am unable to download a trial copy of Womble MPEG-VCR. Can you suggest any other method of joing to 2 MPEG files? I have converted the output of the VCDGear to a 2 DivX (*.avi) files using ImTOO RM Converter, unfortunatly the voices are a liiltle bit out of sync when I play it using the player in my computer. I tried to burn the MPEG files directly after they came out of VCDGear but my Sony DCD Player couldn't find any audio. Any Suggestions Thanks Again
I have never tried this but it should work. Use Isobuster (free) to remove the mpg: http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=141726 I have never had to reencode the audio for bin/cue VCD with this method and a multitude of programs should join your mpg but they aren't free; Avi Join, Media Join; just Google for any. I use TMPGEnc but this will only join mpg files: main page, File, MPEG Tools, merge and cut - add your files in the order you wish, browse to where you want, name them what you want and hit run. Should take about 15 minutes. I use TMPGEnc Plus (DVD) which isn't free but TMPgenc VCD) is.
Thank you for your imput, is was very helpful. #1 I downloaded, installed and used the TMPGEnc and it worked percectly in joining the files. #2 I also installed Iso Buster. I converted a *.DAT to a *.mpg. This played well on my computer but when I burned it and put it on my Sony DVD Player it said " No Audio" #3 I was able to convert this *.mpg to a DivX (.avi) file and play it on my Sony but their was a terrible lip sync problem with the resulting file. Are their any other formats that I can try? Thanks again for your assistance.

I don't think it's a burn problem. I have been burning 10-15 films a week for a few months now. I have downloaded old films from various bit torrent clients and either convert them to DivX using ImTOO RM Converter or DVD using Nero. The DivX format is more efficient as I can get 6 or 7 films on a DVD disc. I haven't had a single problem until I ran into this *.mpeg file as thrown up by VCDGear or Iso Buster. They both seem to be pretty much the same file with the same dead end results. I tried to convert one of these to a DVD using Nero Vision........and even that wouldn't work,,,,,I guess once a VCD always a VCD? Thanks anyway
