I want to convert some old NTSC VHS tapes to DVD. They aren't copy protected. I am wondering if I should convert to either avi or mpeg-2 first? I am also wondering about what are considered to be quality external devices that will let me do this? Any help would be appreciated.
Ranger...I have converted a number of old VHS tapes. If you have the original, you will likely get a good copy going either avi or mpeg-2. I've used both ways. However, I prefer to go directly to mpeg-2 with my present setup. It is also less time consuming. After trying some of the less-expensive solutions, I finally settled on the external Canopus MPEG-PRO EMR 100. It was recommended by other AD users. It converts VHS analog directly to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. It didn't drop frames, that is, get out of synch like the other devices did. The visual quality was excellent...being equal to the source tape. A new unit can be spendy, but used ones show up on eBay regularly. .
With the low price of standalone DVD recorders these days that might be the easiest way. Copy on a RW then pop it into your computer for any clean up. No sync issues, dropped frames etc. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4810683
