I just purchased winAVI so that I convert VOB files (from DVDs) to avi for editing in Windows Movie Maker. (They are home movies that were once on VHS and have been burned to DVD) The avi file I just made will not open in WMM. What settings do I need to use in winAVI to make a file that will open in WMM? Thanks!

You are Makeing a HUGE Mistake in Converting VOB files to AVI to edit in WMM(Windows Movie Maker)...Why??? well for a Number or Reasons...Firstly when you convert VOB to AVI you will loose a Lot of Quality ,Secondly WMM will have to re-encode the AVI file to edit it and Output the edited File which will mean you will loose even more Quality and WMM will Probably Try to make you save your Project in WMV Format which is an awefull Format which will make you loose even more Quality and if you want to put the Files back on to DVD the Files will Yet again have to be Re-encoded to DVD format which means you will loose even more Quality so in the end you will have a DVD that isn"t even watchable Pluss WMM is the Worlds worst editing Program which is isn"t even worth the Price you pay for it and since it is Free Microsoft should be Paying you Money to use there Crap ware....

What you should be doing if you want to edit your DVD is use a Native Mpeg editor Like "Womble Mpeg2VCR" or "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005" which can edit the VOB files without re-encodeing them and without any Quality Loss and even add Transitions and effects and when you are done editing it will save your project as a DVD Compliant Mpeg-2 file which you can simply author back to DVD useing your DVD authoring Program...This way you won"t loose any Quality and you won"t have to spend all that time waiting to convert your Files over and Over again and there will not be any Change in File size and this Whole Process can Be done in a small fraction of the Time it would take you if you were going to do it the WMM way.....

I have an Old Beta version of "Womble Mpeg2VCR" which was free when it was released a couple years ago and it works well so if you want it them PM me with your e-mail address and I can send it to you....

    Cheers
