Hey Guys, I have a PC that recently died, after getting a new motherboard and processor, I tried my hard drive which is a Seagate SATA 160Gb Hard Drive, it didnt work in the onboard SATA port, it recognized the drive in the BIOS but wont boot up! It got as far as the windows logo on startup but then kicked back out to the POST readings, so I had an extra 20GB IDE hard drive and installed windows XP on it and was thinking in order to pull data off of my SATA drive that I could run it as a slave, but windows doesnt recognize the drive. So as a last ditch effort to save my pictures and music and other files I got a Coolmax CD-350-Combo adapter, its a SATA to USB Adapter, a pretty cool little device if I knew how it worked. so I unpakage it and plug it into my SATA drive and the other end is USB 2.0 so I plug it into my USB ports. I saw the USB device manager come up in the systray and I saw my drive in it! I thought cool this is gonna work, but as you can imagine when I opened up "My Computer" I didnt see the drive, I verified that in the USB manager that it was there, so I went to fiddle with right clicking on "My Computer" and going to "Manage" then click on "Disk Management" and I see the drive but I dont know where to go from here, Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!
I can't offer a solution but just so you know SATA drives don't have the master/slave settings that IDE drives do. Are you sure it wasn't the HDD going bad that caused your old system to stop working?
Yeah I'm pretty sure it my motherboard and processor cause I dont get the BIOS beeping upon startup as I used to, heck the display doesnt even come on showing the POST messages. But when I added the new motherboard and processor I get Beep and POST messages. Also when I addded my SATA to the USB Converter, it came up on the PC (I have another 20GB with Windows XP on it.) but could see the drive in "My Computer" I right clicked and went to manage and sure enough it was there but it looks as if I have to monkey with it some more to get it to come up, I had it come up but required me to partition it, and since there's nothing on that partition, It was no good cause I still couldnt look at my Hard drive contents. Is there a service in which I could go to someone and say "here is my hard drive, can you get it running (as a slave) on a PC and let me plug in my USB 250GB Drive and copy over files?" this thing is frustrating the heck outta me!
