    Hi!

I've recently built myself a new PC with parts i selected myself.
With it, i bought a Sony DVD DW-Q120A.

Now, i noticed something when I wanted to copy a dvd movie I have.
The DVD seems to only support 6X and 8X burn speed.
I've had bad experiences with high burning speeds and DVD movies as they tend to more or less destroy the final part of the movie, from 1 hour to 30 mins left of the film. I have bypassed this by burning on the slowest possible speed, 2.4. This speed is not avaiable on my new Sony DVD burner as far as I can tell, so i tried copying a movie on 6X speed.
Again, the end of the movie is all destroyed. Image and sound flickers and the DVD goes into the thrashcan :/
Im currently using Nero 7, but have also tried several other burning software, all seem to end up the same way.

Are there any solutions to this problem?
    Please help

    Hi sondrek
Sounds like the discs you are using. Failing apart at the end like that is usually a sign of poor media. Which are you using?
Use the good stuff like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, made in Japan Sony, Fuji (usually made by Taiyo) or made in japan Maxell.

Check and make sure your drive's firmware is up to date. Go to Nero Smart Start>ToolKit>InfoTool. In the drive tab there is a field for the firmware version. You can see if there is a later version here:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2295

You can also reduce the target size down to 4360 or 4300 so you don't burn to the edge of the disc.

Now the burn speed in Nero - for my LiteOn (your drive is an oem LiteOn) when using 16x media - 6x is as low as it will go in Nero - 8x media usually will go down to 4x. My Pioneer all burn speeds are available that the media supports.
Using good media though you should be fine at 6x though. Still uncomfortable w/ that speed then try a good free burning program like ImgBurn.

    Thanks for fast reply! :)
Im currently using Sony discs, uncertain if they are from Japan though.
I will check all these pointers asap.

I updated my Sony DVD drive but that did not cure this problem.
Will try again tomorrow with Verbatim DVD's...

Sony's are usually decent stuff. They are usually made by Sony themselves or Taiyo Yuden.

    Reduce the target size too.

Have you tried playing these back in the pc or another standalone and see if the problems happens there too?

Last night I tried to burn a DVD on 2,4 speed using ImgBurn, using another Sony DVD disc.
When looking at the log from ImgBurn, I can see that it was set to burn at 2,4 but I also see that the actual burn speed was from 5,9 to 6,1.
I played this DVD on my normal DVD player which is connected to the TV and the movie is destroyed on the excact same spot as the two other DVD discs I have here. (My DVD player is supposed to be of high qual.. it can usually play CD/DVD's that my friends' DVD players can't.)
I then played it on my computer, no problems at all... ?

How do I cap the target size btw?

It's sounding more like a dvd player problem. If you can try one of these discs in another player like a friends.
Might want to try a dvd lens cleaner or blow some compressed in there.

If you're using Shrink go to edit>preferences>preferences tab. In the drop down pick 'custom' then type in 4300.

If you are using Recode in the 1st screen after you pick which option you are using in Recode have 'fit to target' checked (usually is by default) then under that pick custom from the drop down and type in 4300.

Not one of those then just post back w/ program you are using.

There are multiple possible reasons for the problem:
    1) As Binkie pointed out, it may be the DVD player. Since the recorded disc plays all the way through on the drive that recorded it, the blame shifts to the DVD player.
    2) It may be the disc itself. Not being able to play a disc through to the end is a sign of radial tilt errors caused by, among other things, paper labels on a disc or an ink-jet printable disc with a coating that shrank when it cured.
    3) It may be a compatibility issue with the drive and disc so that errors increase in the second half of the disc. (Firmware is written to take speed changes into account. A default power setting that intially works may no longer work when the drive slows down and the laser writing picks up toward the end of a disc.)
    4) It may even be the recording drive if it has a problem.

If the DVD player is an older model it may not be compatible with recorded DVDs. Try a recorded disc in other DVD players in a retail store by jumping chapters to the end of the disc. If those players do play the disc at the end, it may be time to buy one of them to replace the one you have.

I bought a pack of Verbatim discs yesterday and burned the movie again last night, no image shrink - using ImgBurn. Couldnt find any errors on this disc :)
I have always had this problem burning with 4x or 6x speed with my old pc as well (with a rather new NEC drive) and I've always been using the same DVD brand as well (Sony).
I will still test one of the "broken" discs on my friends DVD players, but since Verbatim worked on this one, I consider the problem solved:)

Thanx alot for your inputs on this matter! I have the tips and trix I need to solve this issue myself if it should appear again.. If not, I'll just post back here to you guys ;)

    Hey sondrek
Stick with the Verbs - sounds like they're more compatible w/ the player.

Good to hear that the problem is now considered solved :)

    Oh & you're welcome!
