Anyone else used a Grex? Please report your experience. I think I discovered the problem. Looks like it will not work with some of the recorders listed on their website. I am therefore disappointed.

Checked out the website and was really impressed. The Grex looks like such a simple, elegant solution. Really cool.

I did notice my Presidian 3222 on the list of devices the Grex would work with, which seemed odd since the Presidian ignores copy protection already. (It's as if the Presidian shipped without being completely finished--and what was left unfinished was something the average customer would be unlikely to notice, let alone complain about. Which would seem smart like a fox.)

I am going to get a Presidian and try it. I have been using a Sony VRD-MC1 which is on the Grex list. But the Sony will not record protected material (VHS) from the Grex. My Toshiba will record with the Grex. I think the Grex takes a fraction of a second to recognize and respond to the protection signal. The Sony gets that snippet of signal and "locks up", will not record. It requires stopping the tape. But when the tape starts again, the Sony locks up again. On the TV screen fed from the output of the Toshiba, the protected warning flashes and then disappears. The Toshiba recorder then works. The Sony will handle DL discs, the Toshiba will not.

One program I recorded on VHS from PBS on my antenna had some sort of protection and would not record to the Sony, Grex or no Grex. So I really doubt that the Grex works in all situations.

I've been using the Grex with no problem whatsoever and quality has been very good.

OK. I bought a Presidian recorder and tried it today. I tried to record one VHS tape on the Presidian that had been impossible to copy on a Sony VRD-MC1 even with the use of all sorts of stabilizers, including Grex. With no stabilizer, the Presidian stopped in less than 2 seconds and a notice on the TV screen showed "protected". With the Grex, the tape did record on the Presidian easily. One must conclude that the Sony recorder recognizes some component in the signal of certain protection schemes that the stabilizers do not remove or that some signal is added by the stabilizers that the Sony recognizes. The copy by the Presidian with the Grex was excellent quality. It is evident that the technology of the stabilizers, including the Grex, could use some improvement and probably must absolutely do so in order to continue to be useful.

That's a new one to me. I've never tried to record a copy protected VHS tape on the Presidian. I've never had any problems recording anything off TV or my DVR (Showtime, IFC etc).

Just got my Dimax Grex ver. 6.4. Tried recording a comcast digital cable copy protected program to a Philips DVDR 3390 but was unable to record using moods 01 to 03. I was about to give up when I realized that there is a mood 04. This worked like a charm with excellent video reproduction. I don't know if there are anymore moods after 04, but I'm pleasantly surprised that this thing really works as advertised.

David, how much, if any, did Dimax tech support help you? If they helped you, how many communications to solve the problem? Or did you discover the setting on your own?

Tried e-mailing their tech support twice and twice it came back unsent. I basically just tried all the possible moods available out of desperation. Luckily mood 04 worked. I haven't tried backing up VHS or DVD yet, but will post findings when I do.

I've recently purchased the Grex from Dimax and I'm having trouble getting it to work properly. Before purchasing the Grex, I've tried to burn DVDs from my Time Warner Cable channels and some of the movies will record fine. Others seem to receive a signal or something that causes the recording to stop...sometimes after ten minutes, sometimes much longer than that. So, I purchased the Grex to stop the signal. I have an Emerson vcr/DVD burner combo, model EWR20V5. I'm using a DVR box from Time Warner Cable. My television has the three-plug outlets in the front. I've tried to connect using the photos on Dimax's customer service page, and though I can watch cable, watch television, watch DVDs and burn DVDs using it the way I have it currently connected, it's still not blocking the signal that causes the recording to stop. Can any of you give me some guidance on setup? I'd really appreciate your help.

    Thanks,
    Mariah

    Have you tried changing moods?

Well, I read the part about changing modes, but the instructions say not to change it unless Grex technical support advises me to do so. I've emailed Grex, but haven't heard anything back from them. Should I change it anyway?

Try it. That's what I did. I don't think you can break it. You can always set it back to mood 001 if nothing happens. I e-mailed Dimax about this and they say its OK if it works. As I noted in my previous post, I have version 6.4 and, as far I know, it goes up to mood 004.

Thanks, David - I'll try it this evening. Did you have the same problem I'm having? It's really weird...I can record anything on HBO or Showtime, for example, but anything on Encore records for sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes a lot longer, and then just seems to signal and the recording turns off by itself.
