I'm burning Van Helsing as I type this. If your computer has a DVD playing program, try playing the movie for about 30 seconds. Then close that program (don't open DVD drive) and open DVD Shrink. Then try it. Some DVD drives are picky with reading DVDs in Shrink until they have been played a bit...don't know why, but it seems to work for me.

    Pariah and ScubaPete

Thanks for the suggestions to which I have tried both.
The new DVDD 3.5.2 immediately picks up something on the disk and gives the following 3 messages on the log when I put in the Van Helsing disk:

W 17:21:00 Possible Structure Protection Found!
W 17:21:00 5 areas have been marked as 'suspect'.
W 17:21:00 Dummy sectors will be inserted where necessary.

And then when it gets to VTS_01_4.VOB file it gives this error:

W 17:23:54 Failed to read Sector 1927216 - Unrecovered Read Error

Is there something I can do to get around this structure protection?

Pariah, I tried DVD Shrink after playing the movie for a little while but during analysing stage it hits 'cyclic redundancy error'.

For the life of me I cannot understand why you're having so much trouble with Van Helsing, I did it all with DVD Shrink to rip edit and encode and DVDD to burn.

Did you put the ScubaPete settings on the new DVDD ?

Maybe we have to get you to call in AnyDVD (Beta version) and then recode2 OR CloneDVD2 to see how you fare with them -

    and,
    (not sure about their trial)

Same problem.. My original is a region 4,2 perhaps it's a bad batch of DVD's because it even plays up on my stand alone DVD unit

    sting.ray,

    You do see my point don't you . . . .

I specificly told you, when setting DVDD up with the new settings,

Once you've "ticked" that box you shouldn't receive that error as it's plainly a read error.

I can only sumise that your copy of DVDD is different than everyother copy I've dealt with and as such I don't have any suggestions - Sorry :(

    Pete -

    Thank you Brian,

I thought I was losing what little mind I had left -

I tried to cover all bases and I was butting my head against the wall to try to see where I messed up and I couldn't see where -

Finally, thanks to you, a decent nights sleep seems in the offing ~

    Cheers, Pete

I've had the same problems stingray had with Van Helsing.

Tried all the suggestions here. My first post, but not a new user. Used DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter 3.5.1.0 with the settings indicated by Scuba Pete, upgraded to 3.5.2.0, used the Scuba Pete settings there too, after the default settings didn't work. Used AnyDVD, VobBlanker, even tried DVD XCopy Platinum. Installed, uninstalled, re-installed, re-booted, even tried holding my head with a 30 degree tilt to the equator, but still no joy.

Not sure what the difference would be between those who have been successful with this movie and those who aren't like stingray and me. Any suggestions appreciated.

Read the forums regularly, and thanks to all for the great advice given here. Have burned almost 200 over the last year with only a few difficult ones (everybody needs a set of coasters to protect the table our grandma gave us) along the way, but this forum has always had the solution.

Best way to do it with DVDXCopy Plat. with upgrade. I watched the whole movie without any itch. or do it with SuperDVD Copy to break the code, then DVD2One to put it into one disc, and burn it with Nero 6 or other burning softwares.

I backed-up this movie this afternoon with no problems at all.
I used DVD Shrink to open it, DVD shrink in re-author mode to just grab the main title and 5.1 sound, ended up with 83.6% compression which isn't bad then burnt it at 4x with nero.
Reviewed the copy and it's perfect.

    sting.ray & jwpatrick,

Since you said that even your copy played poorly,

I'm thinking now that the only answer is, you both have, for some reason or another, a bad mfgr. pressed disc. If it's not too late, take it back where you bought it and see if you can get a replacement ESPECIALLY since the original won't even play correctly.

We've tried everything that I can think of AND it is only that disc you haven't been able to copy, you seem to be fine doing other DVD's, - it can be the only solution.

Let me know how you make out,

    Pete :)

Alright for those still haven't no luck like myself here is the reason.

I used Nero CD/DVD Speed to 'Scan Disk' and it turns out that this particular batch of Van Helsing disks have a sector of 'unreadable' data halfway through the disk. Some standalone dvd players like my Pioneer machine will play it without a glitch but dvd writers may experience problems like myself and MarkNZ. The batch in question are the 2 disc collector's edition region 4 discs with barcodes beginning with '5 050582...' or similar.

No matter what program and settings you use it will not be able to overcome this 'unreadable' issue. I have tried all the programs listed above. (but hey prove me wrong!)

Thanks to all the help esp from ScubaPete etc, these people make forums so useful!

I have been burning all my DVD's using DVDShrink + Nero without problems until "Walking Tall". It just would not work so I followed ScubaPeats instructions here and used DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink and it worked fine. Thing is I missed(when printing) the very first part of the instructions so when I got to the DVDShrink part of the procedure there was no ISO file so I had to use "File>Open>and point to the working folder that contained VOB, .BUP AND .IFO files". Now as this worked I am wondering what is the difference between that way and creating an ISO image. Is it better to go the ISO route and why. Funny thing is during the procedure I did select "ISO image file and burn with DVDDecrypter" in DVDShrink but it worked anyway, clever app.

    Trom,

It's OK to rip in the "File" MODE when doing a normal DVD as long as you prepare a VIDEO_TS folder as DVDD doesn't make one and few programs will allow you to capture them when not in the proper VIDEO_TS folder (thank goodness DVD Shrink doesn't need the folder :)

When trying to rip an episodel DVD in the "File" MODE, many times you only get the largest file, not good when there are several episodes there. My main reason for doing it in a ISO image, it gathers 100% of everything on the original, nothing is left behind and a seperate VIDEO_TS folder doesn't have to be made for all the VOB files. (I hate making extra folders :)

    Pete :)

Scuba Pete, returned the movie where I bought it and got a new one. Copied without a problem with DVD Shrink and Decrypter. Apparently, it was a bad disk. Thanks for all the help. Really enjoy the forums here and all the great help I get. Keep up the good work.
