Depends on your Camcorder....If it is a DV Camcorder then you need to have a Firewire port on your PC and you hook the Camcorders Firewire Output into your PC"s firewire Input with a Firewire Cable and you will need DV Capture Software Like WinDV....

If it is an Analogue Camcorder Like a Hi8 or a VHS-C Camcorder then you will need to have an analogue Capture device Installed in your PC to Capture the Video from your Analogue camcorder and store it on your Hard Drive.....

Well with your VHS-C Camcorder you will need a Video Capture Card so you can Capture the Video from your camcorder to your Hard Drive..

What Capture device you get would all depend on a number of Things Like How Much Money you want to spend as a Cheap Crappy Capture device Can be Bought for about $50 and a Good High Quality one Can run you from $250 all the Way up to Many Thousands of dollars....

Here are a Few Links to ones that are fairly good from what I hear...

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1068184&Sku=T777-1020

    or

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1220932&Sku=D10-1012

Or this One is Super Cheap($5) and would be a Good one to start with because of the Price:

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=448345&CatId=1425

But the other Ones will probably produce better quality because they use Hardware Compression were the cheap one uses Software Compression so you will need to have a Really fast PC....

Well anyways you can Pretty Much use any capture device But just stay away for USB capture devices unless they use Hardware Compression and Make sure the Device can Capture at full resolution (720+480/576)....

    Cheers

if you don't want to buy the tuner card but still want to capture to dvd, you'll have to get a stand-alone dvd burner, hook it up to your tv to preview everything, then hook your camcorder up to that to record the signal, but that can be even more expensive. vhs would work, but it limits your editing options and your quality more than dvd.

Well you Know one of those Cards that I left a Link for was only $5 and I"m sure if you PanHandled outside the Liquor Store for a Couple of Hours and Looked Really Pathetic you could Probably make enough to buy that $5 card and Prostitution is allways another Option..LOL..

The Card I have is very Simular to the $5 Card But I had to pay over $50 for mine...With a Card Like that you Could also Capture VHS tapes to your PC and even record TV Shows....

    Just a Thought.....

    Cheers

you could do that; the only thing is your quality will suffer.

yes; every time you re-record your footage, the quality will suffer a bit, same as every time you encode it.
