I've downloaded a DVD and when I tried to burn it with Nero I've got an error message that the references between the DVD parts do not match. The DVD should consist of a short introduction followed by the main film and a short trailer. The content of the Video_ts folder is

    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_0.VOB
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_4.VOB
    which looks normal to me.

I've tried TMPGEnc but it only loads the two short trailers and skips the main film. What I want is to convert and combine the vob files to some new format which then can be used for DVD authoring without very much recompression or effort.

First question: As the vob files are some kind of MPEG data, may I just rename them to mpg without distorting audio/video synchronization ?

Second question: If just renaming the vob files is not recommended, how could I save at least the main film?

I have TMPGEnc XPress 4, TMPGEnc DVD Authoring 3, Super and Nero 8 but I'm no expert with these tools. If you happen to know an answer to my problem, please let me know.

I would expect trailers, extras etc to be listed as VTS_02 or VTS_03, unless they are included in the main movie.

Try 'Open Files' with DVD Shrink.
If it loads without complaint, click 'Re-author' and drag 'Title 1' from the right pane to the left, then 'Backup'.

If it gives an error when loading (and if you are sure that the VOB files playback using a media player) you can probably create a new DVD with new IFO files etc, using IfoEdit.

    Hi attar,

thank you for your quick reply. DVD Shrink returns:
...encountered an error and cannot continue.
    Invalid DVD navigation structure.

Now before I start digging into IFOedit (I haven't used it until now)
is it possible to simply rename the vobs to mpgs?

You should be able to do it with Nero Vision. Make sure Smart Encoding is ticked (the Automatic setting is fine). Load the VOB of the short introduction, then the VOBs which make up the movie. Merge the movie VOBs then add some chapters. Last load the VOB for the short trailer. If you want you can create a menu to choose from the 3. You could also change the order in which they play. With a little luck Nero will not re-encode.

Nero Vision is a pretty versatile app, it's worth learning how to use it.

    Hi attar and MysticE
and thank you for your help. I tried FixVTS first but it modified the vobs' filelenghtses and the resulting files would not play (the first picture to appear on the player froze). The recovery of the
back-up also didn't work. Luckyly I had a back-up anyway in another place. Nero Vision accepted the vobs as input but returned 9 mpgs some of them showing only black. So I tried IFOEdit with only
the vobs in a separate folder with the Create IFOs feature and after two error messages it worked so that I could play the film from the folder.

    Greetings Herwig

When you create new IFO's with IfoEdit, there is an extra step you should use.
After this step, the new files should open in DVD Shrink without complaint or error.

    Run IfoEdit.
Open the IFO and click on "VOB Extras".

    Options:
    [ ] Strip Streams'
    [ ] Strip VobID's
[X] Correct Vob-Unit (Navigation Pack) pointers in VOB-files
    [X] Correct original IFO files

    VOB EXPERT Options:
    [X] Remove P-Uops
    [X] Remove Macrovision
    [X] Adjust Vob-Unit pointers.
    [X] Adjust Audio/Subp point.

    Uncheck this:
    [ ] Auto-copy Menu Files to destination

Click "OK", and when it's done click "Save".
It will offer to overwrite the IFO, say yes and quit.

That was a very efficient instruction. The DVD is now ready and works properly. Once again many thanks.
