Right, so I'm getting a new mobo, and I will have to remove the cpu from the old mobo and put it in the new one. Now can i do that without taking the heatsink and fan off the cpu? If i cant, would i need to get the layer of thermal stuff between the cpu and heatsink(forgot what its called) when i install it again? And how exactly do you unhook the fan from the socket? that metal arm thing is on there pretty tight.

You'll have to remove the HSF from the cpu/mobo to remove the cpu...the hsf is held in place by a retaining clip that attaches to the mobo, and it is advisable to replace the thermal compound . What cpu is it as the hsf are attached in diferent ways depending in what socket it is

I have a socket 478 Celeron D CPU. Do I NEED to replace the thermal paste? If yes, where would I find be able to buy it, and for how much approx.?

Would it be ok if i didnt put thermal paste on? Im not gonna overclock my cpu, and right now it runs at 35C, and the comp has been on all day today. I dont think the thermal paste is that necessary is it???

I use it; it helps transfer the heat properly from the cpu to the heatsink and will keep the cpu cooler in case you decide to game alot or run cpu intensive applications; you can use a thermal pad too. But, really it is up to you. If the processor was an AMD ATHLON 64 BIT FX55 ClawHammer and cost you $799.00 US Dollars you may use it vs. a cheaper cpu you may elect not to use it.

Be sure to monitor your temperatures if you elect NOT to use it.

yes as it transfer the heat from the cpu to heatsink. try with out paste to see what the temp does.

It is suggested that some sort of thermal paste be used. It allows the heat to transfer better from the CPU to the fan heat sink. Radio Shack sell a cheaper version for a couple of bucks. Not as good as the Artic Silver but will work if your in a hurry and better than none at all.

Yea, I'm getting a 2-3 minute delay and then double posts again.

so there is absolutely no way to keep the cpu and HSF together while removing the cpu? The whole thing is helld in place by 2 metal arms, i just lift them and take it out...

There is usually a latch system on the cpu itself that you can't undo with the heat sink in place.

    I'm using Netscape 7.2

Ragnarok2, as long as you don't break the seal between the cpu & heatsink than try but i think you forgot 1 thing. that 1 thing is that the socket is smaller than the cpu so how are you goig to release the cpu if the toggle arm is under the heatsink. eh!!!

Well I guess ill break the bond, and ill just leave the thermal paste thats left over on the cpu and heatsink and ill put them back together again. I guess thats better than no paste at all.

that depends as could cause a bigger gap between the 2 pieces so heat doesn't transfer to well. do it on a short term bases till get new paste.
