Hi everyone, this is my first post. I joined just to say thanks to everybody on this superb site. I searched throughout your site for the answers to my problems, and for my pains, i learnt more than i thought i knew! Excellent!! I'm a newbie to backing up dvd's, and subsequently had a lot of problems while doing so. My problem: CRC errors, In a nutshell i now use +discs, and back up at 2xspeed, and i no longer use 'crap' media. I used Dvd shrink 3.1 and Nero 6.6 to produce the finished article. Special thanks i offer to Scuba Pete. I hope 'newbies' like me get to read this thread. Thanks again to everyone who has unknowlingly helped me.

what kind of media are you using that's giving you these CRC errors? Usually CRC on the burn means burner doesn't like media, firmware update fixes this problem sometimes, check to make sure the discs aren't physically damaged, but generally it revolves around media quality issues.

    Hi Dekufru
crc errors can mean a couple things.
First... it can mean a dirty, scratched, or bad disc...clean disc, try a scratch repair kit, or exchange it for a good one.
Second.. crc errors are also caused by new encryptions that your software isnt built to handle.

If its a newer release, and your getting crc errors, you need to rip the disc with dvd decrypter in the file mode first, then use the shrinking software of your choosing.

good luck and welcome to the forum :)

    Jim

Good advice anyway. As the decryption software in Shrink is out of date, that is a cause for CRC errors. So, if this person (urfukeD or Dekufru) is only using Shrink and Nero, then someone needed to tell them about DVD Decrypter, AnyDVD and other rippers that are kept up to date. Hope they read about the DVDD being orphaned as well. So, with a thank you, this person got some further advice, "get and keep updated ripper software or you may have problems in the future." Also, the Shrink needs to be updated to the 3.2. They can get both the DVD Decrypter and Shrink downloads here at AD.

Thanks for the excellent advice in your replies to my first post here. Very much appreciated. I would like to clarify, the CRC errors would occur when backing up a copy of a copy. The media i used was Hyundai-, and Budget-. Lately i have used Datawrite+ discs with no problems, only one coaster from 50 discs, this disc failed at 70% during the burn. I have some questions, regarding a firmware update is there a chance that i could break my drive if its not used correctly? What is meant by the term "DVD being orphaned". A friend of mine has the same burner a Sony D18A, and he can copy minus discs no problem, he did update his firmware i didn't, is this the reason why i had problems with minus discs, and or cheap media or both? Sorry for the long thread. Dekufru (he)

There is a chance of getting a bad flash to your drive, but updating firmware is the only way that your drive knows how to recognize new media. As you stated because you were using cheap media to do your backup you probably had write errors on the disk, not discernable to your standalone player, but because your PC DVD reader is more sensitive it picked up on the errors and would not go beyond. As for the statement about "DVDD being orphaned" that was a reference to the program DVDDecrypter which is no longer being updated, because of legal issues for it's developer. Make sure you have the latest Shrink, check at http://www.filepedia.com under rippers for the latest. Also you might want to try DVDDecrypter for those disks that Shrink cannot handle.

Thanks arniebear for all your help and advice. I have the latest shrink and DVDDecrypter, i'll just have to get used to the program. Thanks again, i've browsed various forums and some are incredibly rude to the uninformed like me, thanks for your time, patience and understanding.

Therein probably is the source of your problem as Arniebear touched on. Datawrite sells discs made by various companies, so you'd need to check a DVD with DVDInfoPro or DVD Identifier to know what you are actually using. Knowing a brand doesn't necessarily ID a particualar piece of media. Try using something like Verbatim Datalife Plus or another top brand like Maxell or Sony and see if the problems persist. ID the disc even with the name brand, that way others will know what you're talking about when you talk about a particular disc. (In some brands they'll have more than one manufacturer for the same DVD media.) [bold]It may just be poor media.[/bold] No amount of updated firmware or changes in software or hardware will help with bad media. With known good media, if the problems persist, then the troubleshooting process can begin. You'll have eliminated the most common problem and the media purchased is usable, so it isn't a waste of money.

short and sweet reply from me, and a little predictable but predictability buys me zero media problems, Verbatim Datalifeplus. you know it makes sense.
