Sorry to bother fellow forum members but I need a question answered if its not any trouble. I'm trying to get a wired connection to work for my Laptop. I want to be able connect an Ethernet cord from my router(wired) to my Laptop. I'm just not sure how to do that. I figured I could just plug an Ethernet into my router and then into my Laptop and it would work, but of course thats not the case. My laptop is an IBM Thinkpad T42 if that will help. I'm just looking for a way to be able to get Online with my laptop with a Wired connection from my router/modem to my Laptop Any help would be greatly apprecaited. I'll provide any further information if someone needs it to help me with my problem Thank you EDIT: I plug in the Ethernet cord to the Laptop but it doesn't show I have a wired connection when I do so. I go under Network Connections and I have Wireless Network Connection 2(Not Connected) and Wireless Network Connection(Connected). But no option for Wired Connection. Edit: I've went to IBM website to download Networking: Ethernet T42/p Intel PRO/100/1000 LAN adapter. I get the exe and install it to C:\DRIVERS\Win\ETHERNET. That's fine. Then I have to follow further instructions to fully install it. I do the below steps: #1 Start Windows XP, #2 Extract this package onto your hard drive. The default location is C:\DRIVERS\Win\ETHERNET. #3 Click Start then click Control Panel. #4 Click Performance and Maintenance then double-click the System icon. #5 Click the Hardware tab. #6 Click Device Manager. #7 Expand the Network adapters category. #8 Right-click Intel PRO/1000 PL Network Connection or Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection under Network adapters and click Properties. It's the 8th step that is where I'm stuck. When I expand the Network Adapters category, it doesn't bring up Intel PRO/1000M MT Moible. The only items under Network Adapters it brings up are the following: Intel®PRO/Wireless/2200GB Network Connect Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter WPC54G Ver.3 But if I go to the C:/Drivers/Win/ETHERNET, it has an ETHERNET folder and inside it is has a PRO100 folder and a PRO1000 folder So I'm pretty confused
Hi josh1122, not sure what your your problem is at the moment but if you can answer a few questions it may help myself or someone else help you. Are you using XP? In Device manager are there any unrecognised or devices with yellow warning signs on them? If you open a command prompt and type in "ipconfig" do you see anything with a heading "Ethernet adapter Local area connection? When you say " have Wireless Network Connection 2(Not Connected) and Wireless Network Connection(Connected). But no option for Wired Connection." does it still say that when you have removed the ethernet cable from the PC?
Yes I am using XP and thanks for taking the time to respond Also yes there are three yellow ? marks -Ethernet Controller -PCI Modem -Video Controller Those are under the category ''Other Devices'' and have yellow question marks. Also just did ipconfig in command prompt and nope nothing about "Ethernet adapter Local area connection and no it doesn't say when I insert or remove the ethernet cable from my computer, it doesnt say anything when I do that
The problem is that the driver is not installed (Ethernet Controler). you also need to install a modem and Video card driver. check i have the right laptop on this link and then download and install all three. Modem and Video have nothing to do with your problem but should make your display better. Suggest install one at a time only, check yellow mark gone and then install the next. It is important that you download the XP drivers and not the Vista ones. Good luck.
k ive got Intel PRO/100/1000 LAN adapter but is the file named ''PCI CardBus Controller'' the PCI Modem? and which one on the page is the Ethernet Controller? Sorry once again, but I'm not sure which exactly the files are. I appreciate you taking the time to help me
No problem at all, these are the three you need. download exe,s to the desktop. then click on them and follow the prompts by clicking next. Post back if you have any probs bud. I've gotten AMR Soft Modem and ATI Radeon/FIREgl successfully but when I run the exe for INTEL PRO/100/1000 LAN Adapter, it shows up in my drivers folder but when i go to finish the installation by going to control panel/performance and maintainence/device manager/expand network adapters category. It doesnt show ''Intel PRO/1000 PL Network Connection or Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection in Network adapters'' Also Ethernet Controller still has the yellow question mark
Thats great, would be the one you needed that is a problem. Looks like we may have to find another driver. i will have a look about and if i find one i will post. One thing you could do is to ensure there is not a setting in the BIOS to disable and enable ethernet card.
It looks like the right driver but unfortunately reading the read me file, you have a bit of manual work to do. CLEAN INSTALL: (Ethernet Controller in Other devices) Windows XP/XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 detected the Ethernet Controller, but was not able to find the correct device driver. In this case, you will see Ethernet Controller in Other devices in Device Manager. To install the driver, follow the instructions below. 1. Start Windows XP/XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 and logon with administrative privileges. 2. Extract this package onto your hard drive. Done 3. Click Start and Control Panel. 4. Click Performance and Maintenance and System icon. 5. Click Hardware tab. 6. Click Device Manager. 7. Right-click Ethernet Controller in Other devices and click Properties. 8. Click Driver tab. 9. Click Update Driver.... 10. Select No, not this time and click Next . 11. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced). 12. Click Next in Hardware Upgrade Wizard dialog box. 13. Select Search for the best driver in these locations. and Include this location in the search: only. 14. Specify the path to the following sub-directory with the full path name where you extracted the package in step 2 in Include this location in the search:. \PRO1000\Win32 15. Click Next. The driver installation starts. 16. Click Finish when the installation completes. 17. Click Close.
Awesome, it installed the mobile on it but how do I disable the wireless connection? I've tried right click on the icon on the desktop icon on the tabs below and when I click disable on the wireless connection it locks up my laptop. So then I go to network connections and right click the wireless connection icon and try to disable and again it locks up my laptop. Is there any other way to disable wireless connection so a wired connection is free?
Well done, as ddp says you can still use your wired connection with wireless enabled. I believe pressing FN + F5 keys enables/disables wireless networking features on your laptop.
