I am trying to backup some of my files from one computer and transfering them to another. The problem is that I have almost 4G of files I need to transfer, so I have to use a DVD. I have unformatted TY DVDs. Nero 7 is on another of my computers. I just want to make the DVD capable of accepting data files from all of my computers. I see no way to do that with Nero 7. The options I see are creating data DVDs - not preparing or formatting the DVD for backup on another computer.

I also need to backup my .mp3 files using the Sonicstage program. It won't recognize my DVD media (probably because it's unformatted).

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

No reason to format a disc. Just put it in, get all the files you want on the disc ready to burn, hit burn, wait til it's finished. Done

    Are these DVD-RWs?

You should bebale to just pop the DVD in and do a data DVD burn of the files you want to save. If you dont fill the DVD up then dont finalize it that way you can add more on later if you need to. Once the disc is full then close it. At least thats how I do it and it should be readable in any computer DVD drive you place it in. I have never heard of formating a DVD unless of course it is a DVD-RW and you wanna delete the previous data off it and reuse it.

Same with your MP3 all you should have to do is import them into a data DVD and it will burn them to the DVD.

The computer I am trying to backup files from does not have Nero. It has hardly any memory left on it. I am trying to transfer files from this computer to my other computer (that does have Nero on it).

    These are DVD-R discs.

Does it have any burrning software on it?

What operating system is on it?

Do you have a DVD burrner on this computer?

Do you happen to have the computers networked together?

I don't know. It's a Sony Vaio and I have whatever came on it. I haven't seen anything I recognize as burning software, but it could be there.

What operating system is on it?

    XP Home

Do you have a DVD burrner on this computer?

    Yes.

Do you happen to have the computers networked together?

I've been trying but having lots of problems (working on it on another forum, and it isn't looking good). They can't really view each other on my network places. If I use other commands (like \\IP Address), I can see the other computers, but I don't know how to work in this manner.

    Thanks.

Dj948, the only way to get the files onto a disc is to burn them on, so put in a blank disc and use whatever software you have to burn the disc.

Jigen, I don't appear to have burning software on that computer. I just need a DVD properly formatted to do this and need to format my DVD on the computer I have Nero on - if that's possible. Otherwise, I guess there's no solution to this problem.

    Thanks.

If the computer came with a DVD burrner in it then it has to have DVD software on it. Your DVD-R is properly formated unless of course the DVD burrner you have only suports DVD+R disc in that case you will have to buy DVD+R media in order for your DVD Burnner to burn/read the disc. There is no way to format a DVD-R disc to DVD+R.

    Other burning software..
    Sonic (Roxio)
    Easy CD creator

    etc. etc.

It has Soundmax, Intervideo WinDVD5, SonicStage (for use with my mp3 player), Vaio Media, and InterActual. If one of those is a burner, please let me know.

    Thanks.

Well, if you really don't have the software, you can't burn a disc. Nero just cannot format it in a way that will allow the other computer to put files onto it without some burning app.
If this other computer has web access you could just download one. If not, you could burn one onto a disc with the PC that has Nero, then transfer the disc to the other PC and copy it from the disc.

Well, I will need a free software DVD burning program that isn't as large as Nero. Do you know of one? Thanks.

The only free burning apps I've used are DVD Decrypter and IMGburn. They require that you make an ISO image of the files before burning though, so if you are almost out of HD space on that machine this will present a problem.
If it was me, I'd just pull the drive out of the other machine and put it in the good one. Problem solved.

Problem was solved. The problem was he had a DVD-ROM/CD burrner. Read DVD;s and only burnt CD-R's. Figured it out when trying to help with networking issue.

New problem. Could someone help me with transferring a large file (about 3.5GB) from a laptop computer without a DVD burner (and with a broken wireless card) to my desktop computer? I was told I could do this by hooking up a LAN cable? If so, could someone confirm what a LAN cable is? Is that just a cable with USB connections on each end?

    Thanks,
    Dave
