I have an external cd burner and i took it apart to use the cd burner in my computer and iam left with the other parts of the case. i wanted to use that case for an external hdd. after having everything hooked up and connected to my computer, it started reconizing it as usb mass storage, but then gives me message that it cannot be used and it is not on my list of hardware. anyone know what i need to do to get this to work?
this hdd was a used hdd that i had on another computer. after connecting it to the usb i wasn't able to see the drive therefore wasn't able to partition or format it. also, when i connect it to the usb port, i do hear connection confirmation sound that windows xp makes. but still dont see the drive what do u recommend me do ?
is drive set as master by it's jumper? i presume you are using xp. an exclamation marks in device manager?
i just plugged that hdd back onto my other computer and partition it with primary, and the drive is also set to master. also iam getting an exclamation marks in device manager under the "USB Mass Storage Device" section
has to be formated for certain when connected thru the usb not as ide. possibly same goes for partitioning tho not certain as i use win98se with my external hds from 6.4gig upto 80gig presently.
but how would i partition it through usb if the drive is not even reconized. what kind of partition did u have it as? primary or extended?
Try this: Right click on My Computer/Manage. This opens up Computer Management. Scroll down to Storage/Disk Management. You should see the drive there. Right click on it and you can format, make it active, assign drive letter, etc.
