I downloaded an update for Windows XP Media Player and now I receive an "XMNT2001 program missing" error on boot and the "cyclic redundancy check" error every time I try to install something. Is this one of those things where I'm going to need a patch to patch the patch? Does anyone know if Microsoft actually tests any of their software before throwing it out to the unsuspecting public? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanx
What i would do is a System restore to a Point before you installed this update which should solve the Problem...Cheers
Using system restore is always a consideration I forget about. It never works when I really need it though, and unfortunately, it won't work now. But thanks for the reminder. It would've been a good call had it worked. I did notice something I didn't catch the first time around, it seems that I installed the j-peg improperly for this particular hard drive configuration. ( I had installed it as a slave drive just a couple days before I was aware of all this ) The correct configuration was in fact, no j-peg at all. Could this be more to the point of the problem? And if so, how would I go about repairing the situation? I've already removed the peg but the damage has been done, I'm afraid.
Hi, Sory I Can"t help you here as I have No Idea what a "J-peg" is accept ,a Type of Image Format...I have Installed Dozzent of Hard drives But never came across anything called a J-peg...Sory
I'm sorry, I meant "jumper peg" or "jumper". I managed to overlook the fact that I had it set for cable select when I should have left the thing off entirely.
Ohh..sory I guess I should have figured that out..lol Well if all you did was Have the Wrong Jumper setting it should not cause any Permanent dammage, you should be able to set the Slave to Slave and the Master to Master and everything should Be A.O.K., Make sure tham Both Hard drives are on IDE 1 and your CD/DVD drives are on IDE 2, you never put a Hard drive and a CD/DVD drive on the Same IDE Port and Cable because the Drives will only go as Fast as the Slowest Drive on the IDE Port so if you have an ATA/100 Hard drive on the Same IDE as a ATA/33 CD/DVD drive then your Hard drive will only run at ATA/33...And if you are Switching Drives arround you them Might also want to Clear your CMOS and set up your Devices from scratch in your BIOS...If the Drive for some reason is dammaged then you Might want to take it back to the Retailer and exchange it and if they won"t do that then you can allways send it back to the Manufacturer and get a Replacement that is if the warrenty is still Valid which it should say right on the Drive...well I hope this helps a Bit and good Luck...Cheers
Okay, I pulled the jumper and double checked the plug placement. Amazingly, I had it just the way you said, talk about beginners luck! But alas, the problem is much like rap music, still lingering. I was hoping to avoid an exchange. I've been reading about a large number of people going through the same problem after having used Partition Magic to transfer their data to the new drives, this is the same mistake I made. Would this qualify as a stupid pet trick? Is it possible for a program like Partition Magic to physically molest the hard drive just as foreign matter would? Think we could bring some attention to this as a terrorist act? But seriously, is this not something that can be repaired in some way other than my hammer and a two-ton press?
Generally speaking Software should not dammage Hardware, I"m sure there are exceptions with Malicous code or Virusus designed to Corrupt Hardware but I"m sure that Partition magic wouldn"t dammage your Drive..As a Last resort you can allways Re-format and re-install windows and see if that helps ,If it is a Software Problem then it should solve your Problem...Good Luck
Okay, I'm with you. What I did was, as an experiment, I took an empty partition and formatted it and did a clean install of XP Professional. That in itself worked good, so far I think it'll be a keeper. Now, it's just a matter of transferring data around so I can clear out the existing partitions and test them to factory specs. As much as I'm really not looking forward to this process of musical partitions, I know in my heart that this serves many positive functions and I can finally toss out some of the trash that's been taking up space anyway. Although this wasn't the magic fix I was seeking, I am grateful to you for pointing out the obvious. I sometimes get myself into something so deep, I don't think to check for the possibility of there being a ladder behind me. Well, I got my work cut out for me, thanks for the input and foresight. I don't feel so much like a lost kid in the supermarket after all, Thank You! And Happy New Year!
One More thing ,Have you does a Scan disk or something simular to look for Dammaged sectors on the Drive?? Scan disk should be able to find any errors to the Disk it"s self and fix any Fixable errors on the Drive...Well I hope everything works out...Cheers
