How do I ping my router to check if it is working properly?

Or are there other methods to check this router?

    Thank you for any help,
    Bill

Go to the command prompt and type ping, followed by a space, then the ip address of your router.

    Dave,

Thank you for the help. I did as you suggested and got 4 replys from the router. I guess that it is working, is that correct?

Just to add....just cause you can ping it doesnt mean it is configured properly. It just means that it is on and DHCP is working. Were you having trouble accessing the internet when connected?

    DoubleDwn,

Really no problem, this is a old router that has worked fine for a year or so. Then beening a novice I did something wrong and messed it up. Tried to reprogram it and don't know what I am doing. Using DSL modem with Xp home os, and after several attempts could not get on line with the router connected. After playing a bit more asked for a IP address and now I am on line through the router connected. I have no idea if it is working or not.

The question is how do I know if it is doing it's job?

If your PC is connected to the router and the router is connected to your internet source (cable modem, DSL modem) and you can surf the web, then your router is doing its job.

    Rich,

Yes, all the connections you suggested are ok, and am able to search around on the net. So I guess I am back in business.

    Thank you for your help,

    Bill
