    Hi,
I have just bought a 300GB Seagate HDD which I want to put in an external caddy, trouble is I'm struglging to format it !
I ususally use partion magic 8, but it is only coming up at 130GB ish It is definitely a 300GB accoding to the disc... Anyone got any ideas ???
Running Win 2000 & have looked in the search, but no joy :-(

I'm not sure about windows 2000, but I know that in Windows XP if it's not updated to at least SP1 then sometimes it will only recognize 128GB of hard drive space. you could use your partition magic software to create several partitions on the hard drive, or you could update your windows installation to the latest service packs and see if that helps.

    Thanks - For your reply..

I'm currently on SP4 - which i think is the most recent ?

Even more confused now, as i just checked my old disk in the caddy (which is going back inside) & this is reading fine as 152GB (160GB)???

Check the jumpers on the drive. The ones you use to set it to mater or slave. They also use a jumper to limit hard drive size. Make sure that jumper isnt enabled. If not it might be a electronic jumper you would have to use seagate utiltity to set it for larger capacity. Recheck the jumper s and manual if ya have too.:>

    Cheers for that :)
I've just double checked the jumbper & it is master position (furthest away form power cable).

There is one to limit size but there isn't one on there.

Right, tried discwizard and still no luck. Comes up at 137.4Gb but an actual of 127GB when finished.

Thanks ddp for the link, I kind of understand it but not sure what to do ! I went onto the following link & followed the instructions :
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305098

But on it wouldn't let me do it as it said the line in my regisetery was already there ?

So if my system is struggling to see over 137GB, how come i can read my 160gb, but not my 300gb ???

ddp was right....its not windows its seagate...there are many links on the seagate site look into all of them....for some reason the hard drive isnt set right...you have to use their hardware to reprogram the hard drive which isnt fun....took me a long time to do the same with a western digital i have.try this one called sea tools desktop...ok..

    http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/

wish i could come over ,i would have it fixed in a flash...lol...only kidding...hope this helps you...peace

But I have followed all the instruction & can't get my pc to boot from the iso cd (haven't got a floppy)& yes I have changed my boot sequence. I must have restarted my pc about 20 times - why can't they make these progs run from windows !

Can anyone help, before i through the damn thing out the window ?!?
I know it can get to 300gb, my bios knows it is 300gb (well 279), but freekin windows doesn't !!!

The Logical Block Addressing (LBA) in your O/S is still on 28 ; you must have it at 48 -- this will increase the capacity to 144 petabytes ... <smiles> that's 144,000,000 G

The Seagate site has a tool for that -- it's called DiscWizard2003 .

Hmm....if bios recognizes it as a 300 drive, then the best thing is rset it up for slave for the time being. Boot windows up on ya other drive. Then go to control panel, adminstrative tools, then computer management. You will see disk management. Go there. Now you should be able to see the drive unformated. or formated if ya have already.

Now right click and left click on format. Now see if ya can format as a 300 gig drive.
