Hello people, just a quick thread to get some opinions, iv been seeing a couple of adverts on television atm about the use of illegal DBoxes, and was curious weather there is any validity to their cliams that people can be caught.

Can anyone shed some light on the dangers of using a DBOX, shy of stupid people calling NTL, Telewest when they cant see movie channels lol...

Got bits like the movie ones

    "they will blocked"
    "we know your using them"
    "court summons"
    "rubbish picture"
"no guarentee they'll work or you'll be able to return them"

    etc

sounds all like scare tactics and bullshit to be honest, but i was just curious ! anyone got any opinions !

definetly scare tactics ,company digi boxes talk back to the provider , that is why you set the dbox up with a signal splitter ,so that your original box talks back , and you still get a signal for your dbox, and i have been told by someone working with T/West that they are well aware there are dboxes out there but it would not be cost effective for them to prosecute , they are more interested in getting the guys who provide debugged boxes.

lexal23, so do i simply connect the origional telewest box and leave it on standby? or can i use both the dbox2 and the origional telewest box at the same time?

then i could use the dbox2 in the lounge and the telewest box in the bedroom.

    many thanks guys :)

There is no talk back facility on the DBox so it cant send your service provider information.

The Dbox2 does not talk back to the provider, no. But the providors' original boxes do. Thus, if you pay for digital TV and suddenly your feed show that no box is talking back to it, the providor might wonder why.. This is the reason why it's advisable to split the feed and switch the orginal box on at least once a week, just so it can talk back to the providor.. Maybe not 100% necessary to do this, but there is the reason..

Of course if you are paying for a tv service and they try to update you. They would notice your box not responding. If you dont have a tv package your ok, say splitting a cable modem feed.

I'm no legal expert, but I assume that if one accesses services one does not pay for, one is stealing, which is criminal..

That's why everyone at AD urges Dbox2 users not tune into TV channels that they do not pay for..

Remember, the Dbox2 is a PVR and a lot more besides. Me, I bought it only for playing Pacman whilst watching FTA BBC News 24..

    ;)

aint the fooking police got better things to do that chase us lot getting free cable

all be it I do play for sky full package and I pay for the basic ntl tv package, I pay my tax, ni, council tax dont sponge off the government.. so what...I get free cable..

the police should be out their catching the real criminals like rapists, muggers, pedo's murderes and stop wasting time and resource and money chasing ppeople gettingh free cable.. ok I know its not a good argeeument but you get my point...

I had to keep my original box in the loop cos box was only providing 1 channel that TV could pick up otherwise (within that channel I could pick up everything but could tape and watch different channels). Was there another way around that ?

As an aside I have a thread "Linking Starview to video" that if solved could stop me getting a divorce !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry mate but I think that's alot of crap. It is not illegal to sell, buy or own dbox2's.

However if you plug an ntl signal into it and view channels that you haven't payed for then it's illegal.

With ntl I think they only let you use their boxes. So if you use another one to view the channels they wouldn't be happy even if you weren't stealing cable.
