My 1st generation X-box died during a 12 hour GTA marathon.

The HD is OK (Got error 11)

I have bought a new X-box, but how can I retrieve my save games and put them on to a memory card? (I don't want to open up the new X-box, unless absolutely necessary)

error 11 means your xbox isn't seeing your dvd drive....you will have to open your box. Check to see if the IDE cable is plugged in securly,if it is and you're still getting the error....you might have to replace the cable. It could've just come loose after time. If all goes good it could be a 2 dollar fix at the most.

Worst case-your dvd drive is dead and you'll have to get a new one....

    Thanks for replying.

YEp, I tried a new cable and so on. The drive is definately knackered.

Is buying a replacement drive, then backing up save games to a memory card, the only option?

Where in the UK can I get hold of an X-box DVD drive?

if you have a friend with an xbox you could borrow their dvd drive to get your gamesaves off the box...if that's all you are worried about. Then you could search buy and sell forums (they have on at xbox-scene.com in the forums section) or check out pawnshops for cheap xbox's or even ebay.

Ebay is better, at least in my experiences.
