Is it possible to decode a DTS stream on the computer then output it to a reciever(that dosen't support DTS) using a coaxial cable? cheers
i cant answer your qustion directly other than to say that you will struggle to find a sound card that can output the PCM bitstream. You will find that quite strangely, the digital outputs on a sound card will only output stereo.
My Audigy 2 ZS Platinum sound card does DD and DTS without a problem. It isn't cheap. It's a little over $200. There are much cheaper cards that will support surround. I've seen $30 cards that handle up to 7.1 surround (you don't get 7.1 surround with stereo). One thing folks seem to forget about is the software dvd player. It MUST support DD and DTS. I don't know of any free ones that do. I couldn't find one anyway. I ended up getting WinDVD, and it works great. Even if your card supports surround, if your software dvd player doesn't, you won't hear surround.
