Defrag problems for Windows ME

    I have Windows Me and whenever I try to defrag it continually restarts itself and never gets past 0% I also have problems running scandisk, please help! Cheers!

    do both in safemode as you have a program running in the background. do scandisk 1st than defrag always

    Thanks, I have tried this in sae mode but I still have no joy? Any other ideas are greatly appreciated.

    do a control alt del in safe mode to see what is running in the background

    The following are running is safe mode:

    Explorer
    Wtoolsa
    Wsup

    It iwll not let me scan disk (gets about 60%) an dthen starts again

    you're infected by spyware so do this list
    -download & run ccleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ to clean out the crap in windows like cookies, history & whatever
    -download, update & run ad-aware se from http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-1
    -download, update & run spybot s&d from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
    -download, update & run AVG 7 for windows from http://www.grisoft.com/doc/71/lng/us/tpl/tpl01
    -do an online scan with www.antivirus.com free housecall

    Thanks, once i've done these should I go into safe mode and scan disk and then derag?

    I just want to hang around and see how cmsg makes out. This seems to be a very common occurrence with ME. Maybe it’s time to move onto XP or back to 98SE.

    Not to worry ddp, I hang by suspenders only, no ropes around the neck for me… 

    This is a very common occurrence with Windows ME so I don't believe your PC is rubbish, at least based on your original issue. As I stated earlier, it might be time to upgrade to Windows XP which doesn't have the defrag issue that you are experiencing. :)
