    Hello from Maine,

    Yikes!

I have a 1.6 Xbox and a DuoX2 GS chip. Following the instructions I installed the chip and soldered on the "rebuild board thing". As instructed I put the mod chip's swicth onto "bank 2" as apparently that is for 1.6 Xbox.

When I booted it had a blue screen like 3.03 or something asking for a bios file, so I burned M8+ onto a good DVD and flashed it. during the flash the system shut off abruptly, now it won't boot, I only get a black screen with a red flashing Xbox.

I hit Google after that and I think maybe the problem is my M8+ bios file is 256K in size and mu bios bank is 512K in size.

    My questions:

    1. Have I killed the chip or can I try again using bank one?

    2. Was I supposed to make the bios file 512K in size?

    3. Could it be that I did not solder everything correctly?

    Thank you,
    Craig

p.s. I have a blue modchip and the bios file is "EvolutionX M8+ BIOS" from 08/11-2004

oops, I've done more Googleing. Apparently I was supposed to "make" the 256K bios file into 512K? How am I supposed to do that?

Well for the 1.6 Xbox you need the "m8+ 1.6 bios 512k" it is specifically for the 1.6 version and it easy enough to find try here

Using the m8+ rather than the m8+ 1.6 version could be what caused the problem. Now because I don't think you can use the bank0 on a duox2 gs for the 1.6 version Xbox you will probably have to buy a programmer to restore the bios on the chip. but i did see something about a way to flash the bank by booting the flash disk from the bank0 and then switching to bank1 right before you start the flash process but here you are getting into vary dangerous territory because its is easy to mess things up but here is the site I read it from.

Remember I have never tried this!!

    Thanks for the tip.

Long story short, here is what happened.

I already had an 1.4 Xbox with a modchip, flashed correctly at bank 0.

Then I had my buddy's Xbox, I installed a DuoX2 GS (IIR the name) and incorrectly flashed bank 1. So I swapped modchips between the two. After that I had a 1.4 with an unflashed modchip on bank 0 and a 1.6 Xbox with an unflashed modchip on bank 1. I correctly flashed the 1.4 Xbox using an old EvoX boot disk I made over a year ago (maybe 2), then updated it with Slayers 2.7 disk to a recent bios. It works well :)

Then I booted the 1.6 Xbox that contained a modchip on bank 1, that chip had been flashed at bank 0 but for some reason - booting it on bank 1 still showed the bios that was on bank 0! It was the wrong bios for a 1.6. Luckily I was able to run slayers 2.7 disk and flash the modchip with a 1.6 specific bios. Now it works well also! But for some reason it will not display the temperatures correctly... It doesn't matter though, I did the 80mm fan mod and took all of the superfluous material out of the case so it has great airflow.

I'm sure the system runs around 120f degrees. The fan is somewhat loud when the TV is off - but when playing a game with moderate volume it's not very noticeable.

Here are some pics of the case:

I also put a sleeve bearing (quiet) 80mm fan in there connected to the 12 volt molex (hard drive cable).

I changed the name of this thread to "delete" because I just sort of panicked and posted before I read and understood the instructions. I think it's inconvenient that the modchips don't ship with a bios. So, "oops", I goofed!

    Cheers,
    Craig
