there are three cable, the power, the thin 40 pin IDE and a small one with a ire that runs to the motherboard.. it fit the same as the one I pulled out of there. ALl cables sercured three times.
It's on the first jumper on the IDE cable, the same one that was plusgged into a cd-r device that (was working fine) that I removed

I take this to mean does my pc see a drive in that slot when i look in my computer.. No, it does not.
and when I boot up it goes to a black screen that asks me if I want to go to set-up (F12) or hit F1 to continue (booting up)

Thank you for the help, this is what hap's in set-up.
    it reads:
    Primary Drive 0............................Hard Drive
    Primary Drive 1............................ OFF

    Seconddary drive 0........................Uknown Device
    Seconddary drive 1........................Uknown Device

when I hit enter on either of the secondary drive options the prompt reads:
    Drive Type.................. Auto
    Capacity.................... N/A

Nothing I have been able to do will change these settings.

*The other thing I did is go into device manager and untinstall that drive. Upon restarting I get a little message in the systray that says, 'New Hardware Found' Then it automatically seemes to install it to some desgree because it shows up in Device Manager. It shows a series of numbers. (DC WD400BB-75JA1)
    It Doesn't say Benq 1640

As mentioned easrlier, it does not show up 'My Computer' and it won't read a disk.
There is a disk that came with the drive. Im hoping that it will have the correct drivers to get it to run, but I cannot get it to read anything.
I also tried unistalling it but going into Control panel, Add New Hardware. and No luck.. it will reognize that there is a drive there in the list of hardware as WDC...) but when i click it and tell it to install. It doesn't work.
    Thanks again for any help.

i would love to see it in person, but i think the problem lies in the jumper settings on the back of the drive. the number device manager sees looks like a western digital 40 gig harddrive. do you have 2 harddrives in the machine?
in any case, you need to set the harddrive to master (which it should be already) and set the new drive to slave. try playing around with that and maybe you need to enable it in the bios.

    Hi there,

    Dell computers LOVE "Cable Select".

I own a few Dell PCs and it's what we have at work.

I had a few weird problems when I selected Master & Slave.

Set to Cable Select and POOF everything was back to normal.

    Go figure !

Set both devices to Cable Select, and make sure it's turn ON in the BIOS (And/Or set to AUTO).

Then it should see both devices.

    yes, there are two harddrives.
the second hard drive i put in (without any complication, just plug and played) but I had to do it attaching it to there had been a floppy disk drive. (there is not extra slots in this machine b/c its a small chasis)

*Im trying to find on google how set a drive to master or slave.
I guess I do this in set-up menu?

    tx so much guys

I just realized my secondary hard drive is not showing up either!
do I access the CMOS (to set the hard drive to master and the new drive to slave) in that Set-up Screen? (pressing F2)

The only option it gives me there that I can think to access is:
    Seconddary drive 0........................Uknown Device
    Seconddary drive 1........................Uknown Device

to set these to Auto of OFF
I put them on Auto (Nothing happening)
    -----------------------------------------------------
    How do I do this:
position is the jumper on the back of the drive as master, slave or cable select?

*I put this new drive where the old drive had been, shouldn't that be the only place it could go?
There is no room to put it anywhere else on the cable and have it line up with the slot.

    THANK YOU

Pull that Benq 1640 out of your computer. On the top, there should be a picture of how to set it up as a slave to the hard drive that you have on the ribbon cable, already.

Once you change the jumper setting again, hook it up, and boot your computer.

There is no picture showing how to set it up as a ,master or slave/
But it has to go intothe jumper Ihave it on, it is the only one there, and the same one that was connected to the cd-r drive that i removed.
How can this be so compicated? I have switched disk drives before and never had a problem like this :(
    thanks again/

there is 2 rows of pins with 3 pins per row & total of 6 pins. the 2 pins closes to the power connector is master, the middle 2 is slave & the 2 closes to audio cable is cable select.

I set mine exactly as cougar_ii stated,Dells prefer the cable select.
Set both devices to Cable Select, and make sure it's turn ON in the BIOS (And/Or set to AUTO).

Mine can only plug into the center slot; has a single row of four pins. On the Phillips drive I pulled out of there I can see above that slot that it reads:
    Audio Out
    R GND L

The Benq doesn't say anything, but the plug will only go into that center slot, and the pin configuration is the same for both drives. So I am at a loss as to why this isn't working.
I would like to put it on cable select but it's a different plug!
    ugh.. I'll take another look.
    tx.

no, there is no plug that will fit into the cable select slot. each one of those three slots has a different plug configuration, so how can I choose Cable Select? My plug fits in the middle slot only.
do I need to buy a different cable?
sorry about all this, I really appreciate all the help, I know I will get it sooner or later.. what bums me out is now my secondary hard drive isn't showing up either :(
    thanks.

    got it !!
the problem was that I had no idea how to switch between Master Slave and Cable Select. Having never done it, pulling out that little prong connector to choose is what i was missing. Thank You so much. Put on cable select it is now reading, and the other hard drive is showing up..
im going to try writing now.

    best to all, Happy Holidays!!
