I have DELL XPS GEn4 system with the Philips DVD8631 drive. I worked with dell support for 4+ hourstoday. I have been passed around like a bogus twenty dollar bill. they are offering the same drive aurgh... should have stayed with HP or moved to alien.

... Why not buy a drive and install it yourself ... You can get a Benq or NEC for less than $50 ...

    Screw the HP!!
    Alien????

I see you've posted to the huge Philips DVD8631 drive thread, Lots of bad drives on that model.

I've been posting to several members threads of another phillips burner that is a re-badged benq 1620! I think dell got the hint at using that crappy drive, you were'nt so fortunant.

I've got 2 benq 1620s and not a single complaint from me,regardless if I am backing up to harddrive or Rip+burn on the fly!

Also has a very high compatability rate on stand alones/ps2s and pc drives.

Nec 3500 series are also excellent burners. Check out newegg.com

That under $50 price usually includes Fed Ex.

Edit: Newegg.com looks like they are out of benq 1620s.Everybody must be grabbing them up, LOL

    Here's the NEC 3520 and 3540:
