I have an older Dell Inspirion XPS Gen 2 that I recently put Windows 7 on. Everything went really smooth except the audio driver. According to the Dell support website, it's a Sigmatel STAC 975X AC97. I've done some research and found that apparently drivers haven't been made to support this under Windows 7. I noticed a few other people had luck by doing different things like installing the XP version of the drivers under compatibility mode. I tried this with no luck. I can't seem to get the audio working for anything. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
Hmm, yeah I tried that, and it didn't work either. I just checked something I haven't tried before. I noticed before that when I did the XP version of the driver under compatibility mode for Vista, it would install correctly and the mixer even showed sound being played, but nothing would come from the speakers. I just tried to plug in headphones, and I can hear sound through the headphones. Does this mean that it's a problem with the speakers in the laptop?
Not that I see right away... I just started using this laptop. It was a friend's before and he just gave it to me cause the video card fried, but I got another card for it. So I literally just started using it today. Not sure if there are any switches or not.
