Hi, my mate just bought a Gainward Rampage700 2048MB GS GLH graphics card for his XPS630 (I think). I removed the 2 nividia cards that came with the dell and installed the Gainward in the primary PCIe slot. Installed all the drivers etc... but the problem is when he goes to run a game, FarCry2 or Fable3 the PC completely powers off after the intro. I was wondering is it possible the PSU does not have enough juice, 750w, or have I missed something. The game was running on the older nVidia setup, should he reinstall? Any help greatly appreciated. thanks
The power suplies in Dell systems are very rarely powerful enough to manage a graphics upgrade, they certainly can't manage a HD4870X2 like he has (and I'm surprised it even fit in the case) and the highest rated one I've ever seen is 370W, nowhere near 750 (and you need an absolute minimum 450W PSU to run that card, ATI recommend 600) The best I can suggest is to get a PC Power & Cooling Silencer Dell model, which will power the card, but run very noisy. You should also be concerned about heat in that system as the XPS630 does not have much ventilation.
according to this link it is 750 watt psu. Specifications link http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps630i/en/OM/HTML/specs.htm#wp1104354 boylers, is there a cable running from the psu to the videocard?
Interesting. However, by the looks of things it is not a real 750W PSU else it would run the system. You would be wise to check the cable connections boylers, but if I remember rightly, the 4870X2 won't even power up at all if it does not have both connectors attached.
Thankjs for the input. As I said, the Dell was running 2 nVidia cards in SLI, each with their own power connection. I put both into the Gainward, 1 with the 6-8 pin adapter and it powers up fine and will run in windows all day. Its just when it comes to games time that it crashes completely which does seem like a power drain issue. Might have to put the nVidias back afterall
